“As any honest magician knows, true magic inheres in the ordinary, the commonplace, the everyday, the mystery of the obvious. Only petty minds and trivial souls yearn for supernatural events, incapable of perceiving that everything -- everything! -- within and around them is pure miracle.”  -Edward Abbey; Abbey’s Road; Plume; 1979.

This House of Sky

In this house of sky
the moon wants a flower:
color puddles,
ripples,
is caged in looping calls.

This house of sky
is not activist
is not demanding rights
is not vocal

it inheres to magic
this house of sky
with its thudding clouds
loud wind,
light
that at once fills my
head, heart, whole
being.

This house of sky
built from age-old hemlock,
soft shale from the edge of the
sea;
built from water crystals,
dancing down the
layers of the thermometer:
built out of blue -
so many shades, I could count them
until my last breath.
I could clean my windows
to have the view
four or five geese, Canadian,
in front of a single cloud:
this cold, cold morning the sky
has no need for
fire, warmth,
or a longer line of migrators,
fleeing.

The Immigrant Story
by Grace Paley

One day in my family’s life
I entered the English language
d's and t's in my teeth      s's steaming
I elongated i's
lost a few r's      included
them where they weren’t wanted
I often stationed a preposition
at the end of a sentence
this was to guard against
aggrieved inflection
Much to my surprise strangers understood me
I continued talking      I was brazen      I said
everywhere I go there are verbs that are doing nothing
it has been years since certain nouns were referred to
         by their right names
I must ask a sad question
will the laws of entropy operate in spite of strictness
is there a literature that chants the disappearance
         of tongues

At the cusp of the new year, I'm thinking about the clamoring all around us - the voices demanding to be heard, demanding action.  It seems there is nothing that lacks visibility.  Money and power have their way with us.  I'm aware of my center: it is this literature that is chanting the tongues whose disappearance is sitting on the horizon.  It's a foreign language, the language of our world - plastic form, color, texture; what our eyes see, what our hearts feel.
