Chamber Thanksgiving Drive provides baskets for over 100 families

The WOCC's annual Thanksgiving Drive was more successful than ever in 2016. This year, we are happy to announce that the hard work of Chamber Members, volunteers, board and team members, ambassadors and networking groups contributed to 103 families receiving Thanksgiving baskets. This is an increase of 30 from last year!

Families received Thanksgiving baskets containing non-perishable food items and gift cards to purchase turkey, ham or other food items. Efforts were coordinated through the Ivey Lane, Maxey and Pine Hills Community Centers.

Our sincere thanks go to project chair Linda Osterberg, along with everyone who donated time, money and/or efforts to making this project a huge success!

Orlando ranked as Forbes' 3rd best city for jobs
Orlando’s resurgence has been driven by growth in professional business service jobs (up 26.8% since 2010) , construction-related employment (up 11.5%) and by its largest sector, hospitality, up 22%. The metro area’s population has exploded from 1.2 million in 1990 to 2.3 million today. Much of this recent growth has come from domestic migration, which has accelerated two and half fold since the end of the recession. This has fueled a modest resurgence in construction employment, which expanded 4.6% in the last year in the Florida city. Read more

Overtime rule hang-up requires careful communication about pay decisions
If employers have announced employee raises or eligibility for overtime pay because of the Department of Labor's (DOL's) revised overtime rule, they may need to honor those commitments. Communications about the impact of a court's decision to temporarily block implementation of the overtime rule should honor any contracts created in prior messages about the rule. Learn more

Orlando lucrative for MSPs
As Clinton Pownall, president and CEO at Computer Business Consultants, tells Channelnomics, the area is a lucrative one for managed service providers (MSPs). According to the executive, business owners in the area have the maturity level and understanding of managed services that an MSP desires, resulting in great rapport between an MSP and the owner of a prospect. Somewhat ironically, it seems what pushed Orlando into becoming a great place for MSPs is the recent recession. It seems the city and Die Hard's John McClane may have something in common, as Pownall says the area bounced back "with a vengeance" after the recession. Full article

Election’s Impact on the Real Estate Market

Guest article by Brian Koss of Keller Williams Classic Real Estate - Team Koss.

We can all agree, the 2016 Election was one for the history books. Both pollsters and financial experts alike, failed to predict the outcome of the election, as well as its impact on the economy.

Wall Street overwhelmingly supported Secretary Clinton's campaign. Some in the financial community predicted an almost doomsday-like scenario if Trump were elected. Yet, in the days following Trump’s victory, markets rallied to record-breaking heights. This spike is perhaps attributable to investor’s realization that Trump’s proposed tax, health, regulatory and energy reforms, as well as projected investment in infrastructure, would create a pro-growth environment. Making the Chamber Part of Your Business Plan

“I can never make it to any events, I don’t have time.” This is the number one thing we hear from members who feel they are not able to use their membership effectively. If that sounds like you, there is another exciting and effective side of membership you may not know about and to which you have access! As technology grows, businesses grow and needs grow, the Chamber grows with you. The membership of yesterday is not the membership of today, and it will forever evolve to meet the needs of our members. You now have access to benefits such as:

  • Creating a Chamber business plan: Tell us your goals, how to refer you best, who you wish to connect with so that you have a team who knows how to refer you and help you achieve your business goals.
  • Posing as the expert: We facilitate the opportunity to position you as the industry expert through an educational or informational article that we publish for you.
  • Chamber Member Spotlight: A social media write-up “Chamber Member Spotlight,” where we feature your business through whatever avenue you use.
  • Telling your story: Posting your achievements, milestones, anniversaries and events on our calendar, e-pub and/or website.
  • Statistics on who is viewing you: Full 24-hour access to who is finding and viewing your profile and clicking through to your webpage.

There are many more benefits and ways we help you connect. For those of you who feel lost in the sea of membership, you always have your Chamber Team lifeguards waiting to help you chart a safe and profitable course through the murky waters of business! No time to attend our wonderful events? That is completely OK; email the membership team to see what benefits will benefit you and your busy lifestyle.
