It’s our biggest social event of the year! Get caught up on the latest NMAF news, share your favorite animal stories, visit with old friends and meet new ones.  Please help us celebrate with all the members of NMAF (prospective new members are welcome, too!), and get ready for an interesting presentation and discussion with our Guest Speaker, Judge Rosemary Cosgrove-Aguilar, who oversees a new Bernalillo County specialty court called the PAW Court.  The PAW Court handles misdemeanor animal abuse cases with the goal of providing tools for offenders to stop re-offending, and to prevent more violent crimes.  Ours may be only the second of its kind in the country.  We will also be holding an election of Board members.  Remember, you must be a current member with your dues paid in order to vote.

Please join us and show your support for New Mexico Animal Friends and our dedicated Board of Directors!  Enter through the almost-hidden door on the east side of the building.  Refreshments will be served.  We hope to see you there!

A GREAT-DANE-SIZED THANK-YOU to LONG LEASH ON LIFE for their extraordinary donation of 150,000 pounds of pet food and supplies to 34 of New Mexico’s rescue groups and food banks, including NMAF, and to their wonderful staff who designated, packaged, palleted, and prepared it all for us to fetch!  It was a huge effort!  Volunteers from all groups chipped in to help load into vehicles the thousands of donated items for the pets who were served by LLOL’s generosity.  And another thank-you goes out to the NMAF volunteers who spent a cold afternoon in the Long Leash parking lot, helping to load the donations into trucks and cars, and then transporting and distributing the goods to our foster volunteers.  It was truly a joyful day spent in the spirit of giving ... and receiving!

DOG NEWS

October was an exciting month for the dogs!

Jack's and Jill's puppies continue to do well.  They opened their eyes and starting wandering around.  They are starting to eat solid food, much to the relief of Jill!  Gloria strove to increase their weight while at least maintaining Jill's as milk production is hard for all those little hungry suckers!  Gloria named them after planets:  Venus, Mars, Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto.  Most are pre-adopted waiting to go to their foster-to-adopt homes.  They are taking their first steps outside to explore, meet other dogs and enjoy some NM sunshine.

NMAF took in another litter of puppies from the Rio Rancho Animal Shelter.  They were found behind a dumpster at 7-10 days old.  The mother was unable to be found.  Michelle, Maya and Frankie are bottle feeding them.  Stay tuned as the little ones open their eyes and start roaming and playing.  Former adoptees Allie and Oliver are supervising their care.  Pictures will be posted on Facebook and the website.  Donations (please) will go towards their spays/neuters, chips and many vaccinations.

October saw the 200th 2016 dog adoption for NMAF!!!  Pecan was adopted by the family of one of our volunteers!  Congratulations to the entire dog team for a record setting year!!!

Despite our great number of adoptions, our foster team is in dire need of fosters.  We cannot keep up these fantastic numbers without replacing the fosters we have lost this year to death, moving and medical issues.  If you know of anyone that can temporarily open their heart and home to a little furry one, please have them contact the office.

Petco in the Far North Shopping Center (6300 San Mateo Blvd. NE) has provided a splendid venue for NMAF’s adoptable cats.  We are grateful to the store manager and assistant manager, Tom and Janette, and their friendly staff, for hosting our cat adoptions on Saturdays from 11 to 3.

Please stop by to say hello, pet a kitty, and see our new digs!

James Bond and Luna Lovegood - Adopted Together

Dashing James Bond now has great new digs where he's joyfully co-habitating with none other than shy little Luna Lovegood!  Their new mom reports that the duo is bonding beautifully!

~Update from Sandy, the Adopter of James and Luna:

"I wanted everyone to know that I am so pleased with the way things are going!  It only took a couple of days for James and Luna (now Poppy) to make friends.  As you thought, James has brought Poppy out of her shyness.  It is so fun to watch them play together & they even groom each other!  This is the kind of situation I was hoping for & I couldn't be happier.  James is so sweet & loving & it's obvious he has had wonderful care.  Jessica, you do a great job as a volunteer! Thnx!!!"

Who would have thought a simple girl like Luna could win James' heart?  We’re wishing these two adorable kittens and their new mom, Sandy, a loving life together.
