Cross Connections - December 2016

When the angels had left them

and gone into heaven,

the shepherds said to one another,

"Let's go to Bethlehem

and see this thing

that has happened,

which the Lord has told us about."

Have You Been to Bethlehem Lately?

Four years ago I had the great privilege to visit Israel. The purpose of the trip was business, not pleasure. I was going to meet other WELS missionaries from around the world for a workshop on a new method of teaching Greek in our world seminaries. A secondary purpose was simply to do some networking with these missionaries and share ideas that might have benefits in our own areas of ministry. We achieved those purposes.

Of course, since we had all traveled to the country that God used as the stage for much of his plan of salvation, we couldn’t help but take a little time to see what we could. We had two days before the workshop started and two after it finished, and in that time we saw sites with connections to many biblical figures - Abraham, David, Ahab, Paul, Herod the Great, and, of course, Jesus.

It was an unforgettable experience to see those places and walk the same paths that our Savior and our ancestors by faith trod. At the same time, though, it was a let-down. Those trying to capitalize on all the tourism distract from the deep meaning held by these historic jewels. And the true message that Christ came to bring is almost nonexistent.

Thank the Lord that we don’t have to travel to the so-called “Holy Land” in order to see Jesus and hear his voice. The shepherds may have had to travel to Bethlehem to see their Savior, but we do not. It’s been four years since I traveled there, but I’ve seen and heard him many, many times since then. And so, I pray, have you. Every time we go to his word, either at church or at home or anywhere else, we are traveling to Bethlehem and seeing the little Child born for us and laid in the manger. Not only do we see him, but we see why he came. And so long as we continue to seek him there in his word, we can be certain that his message will never be clouded or distorted.

But we must go there often. Occasional visits will not do. The less we see of our Savior, the blurrier he and his work on our behalf become. So I ask you, “Have you been to Bethlehem lately?” Though he was born so long ago, he still waits for you there. He wants you to visit him every day. He wants you to bring your families along. He wants to speak with you and give you his precious gifts. As you might guess, he is a most hospitable host. So go there! Not to Israel (though if you have the chance, by all means take it), but to your Bible, to his word and promises of grace and mercy, to the true story of a child come down from heaven to make peace between God and the people of this world.

May God bless your preparations and celebrations this Advent and Christmas season!

- Pastor Foxen

When these adorable children grew up, they married each other. Today they are members at Cross of Glory. Can you guess who they are? See below for the answer and to get to know a bit more about them.
Cross of Glory School News

Greetings from your school for Christian education! The Lord has blessed us this year with some growth throughout the grade levels. Our Preschool rooms have had a pretty steady stream of inquiries throughout the year which has added to enrolled students. Our program now has 39 students in its first year of being split into two classrooms. We expect that we will continue to see growth in this setting so that more little lambs can hear about their Savior. The LES also has seen growth. With an enrollment of 42 students, almost half are in grades Kindergarten and 1. We ask for your prayers that the Lord continue to bless our growth and sustain it to build up our school over the next number of years. We have also been blessed to receive several upper graders this year which doesn't always happen.

Our middle and upper grades have also been blessed with some additional tools in Chromebooks. We have a 1:1 student to device ratio in those two classrooms. The Chromebooks allow the teachers to have their students access various websites and resources available online throughout the day. Students use them for typing, reading assessments, spelling tests, writing, educational videos, producing presentations, and more. They are a blessing in this technology driven world which expects students to know their way around a computer.

Thank you for your support in the spread of the Gospel.  Through your gifts and donations through ACSTO we have a more stable budget to work with. Through your prayers, God has been blessing us with excellent teachers, great staff, and an increasing enrollment. Continue to pray that our ministry at Cross of Glory be blessed for both the church and the school.

Growth Groups

Get ready! In January, we'll be kicking off a number of opportunities to be in the Word and grow closer to each other at the same time! We're calling these opportunities "Growth Groups." What's a growth group?

- It's a weekly meeting of small groups of members for about 1.5 hours

- It's a meeting that can take place anywhere - someone's house, a restaurant or cafe, the White Tanks - you name it!

- It's a meeting designed to get people closer to one another, doing activities that you love!

- It's a chance to grow spiritually as the group leader facilitates a discussion based on the previous Sunday's sermon

If you'd be interested in organizing or leading one of these groups, please let Pastor Foxen know. We'd like to have as many as possible all over the Phoenix area, so that all of our members can participate in one. If you'd rather not lead or host at this time, but just want to be part of the group, look for signup sheets to be coming soon! Ideal group size is around 10.
Children's Church Corner

Hey, parents! Use this section to prepare or review the lessons your kids will hear in Children's Church. Remember, though we happily teach your children, the main responsibility for their spiritual growth lies with you. Make it a priority, and they will learn to make it a priority as well. This training produces eternal results!

12/11 - The Rich Ruler and the Certainty of Our Salvation (Luke 18:18-27)

12/18 - Children's Christmas Service - No Children's Church

Fellowship Corner

As believers in Christ, we are all members of the his body. He's blessed us with each other, and we thought it would be nice for us all to get to know one another a little better. With that in mind, we'll feature a different family of members each month in our newsletter.
Dennis and Diane Lawrence

"We could hardly wait for it to be finished," Dennis and Diane said about Cross of Glory as its new building was going up in their neighborhood. "We checked it out and loved it!"  With that, Dennis and Diane joined the Cross of Glory family. We're sure glad that they did.

Dennis and Diane met when they were both single parents. They attended a dance put on by the organization, Parents Without Partners, and they've been dancing through life together since.  Professionally, Dennis has always been fixing computers. He is also the go-to guy for technological solutions at church. Diane worked as a legal secretary or paralegal. At COG, Dennis fills the role of Board of Evangelism Chairman and also serves on the technology committee. If they have a patch of free time, Dennis likes watching movies and Diane likes to do crafts. One of the two claims to be shy and the other is an only child. Can you guess which is which? To find out, ask them the next time you see them.

Psalm 136

Give thanks
to the LORD, for he is good.   His love endures forever.  Give thanks to the God of gods.   His love endures forever.  Give thanks to the Lord of lords:   His love endures forever.  to him who alone does great wonders,   His love endures forever.  who by his understanding made the heavens,   His love endures forever.  who spread out the earth upon the waters,   His love endures forever.  who made the great lights—   His love endures forever.  the sun to govern the day,   His love endures forever.  the moon and stars to govern the night;   His love endures forever.  to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt   His love endures forever.  and brought Israel out from among them   His love endures forever.  with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;   His love endures forever.  to him who divided the Red Sea asunder   His love endures forever.  and brought Israel through the midst of it,   His love endures forever.  but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;   His love endures forever.  to him who led his people through the wilderness;   His love endures forever.  to him who struck down great kings, His love endures forever.  and killed mighty kings—   His love endures forever.  Sihon king of the Amorites   His love endures forever.  and Og king of Bashan—   His love endures forever.  and gave their land as an inheritance,   His love endures forever.  an inheritance to his servant Israel.   His love endures forever.  He remembered us in our low estate   His love endures forever.  and freed us from our enemies.   His love endures forever.  He gives food to every creature.   His love endures forever.  Give thanks to the God of heaven.   His love endures forever.
