Improvement in Obesity: Young Children Enrolled in WIC
According to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, obesity among children ages 2 to 4 years who are enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) decreased from 15.9 percent in 2010 to 14.5 percent in 2014. In addition, 34 of 56 WIC state agencies reported modest decreases in
obesity among young children.
Early Child Care Obesity-Prevention State Indicators Report
CDC's Early Care and Education State Indicator Report tracks state policies that aim to prevent obesity in child care settings. The 2016 report examines 15 measures regarding each state's licensing regulations for high-impact obesity prevention standards. From 2011-2014, 25 states made licensing updates and all included obesity prevention. Mississippi leads the nation, meeting 15 of 47 high-impact obesity prevention standards. The State of Obesity, a collaborative project of the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, produced graphics to explore the indicators in the CDC report.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight has partnered with New York-based Kognito, leaders in immersive learning experiences that drive positive change in health behaviors, to launch a new tool for pediatricians in the fight to reduce childhood obesity. Change Talk: Childhood Obesity is a web-based module and mobile app designed to help health professionals utilize motivational interviewing techniques to navigate challenging family and patient conversations regarding childhood obesity.

FIND PARTNERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST OBESITY & DIABETES
Oral health advocates are not the only ones raising awareness about the harmful effects of sugar. People working in obesity and diabetes prevention around the country are sounding the same alarms and doing so more loudly every day. Frequently you will see all three – obesity, diabetes and tooth decay – mentioned together. When you don't, please make it a point to contact the source and ask to have oral health included among the preventable childhood diseases associated with sugar consumption in all its forms. And of course recommend including wording about drinking water that contains fluoride!
