Except as provided in Sentence (2), this code applies to the design and construction of all new buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.1.(1) of Division A of the NECB and to additions.

The NECB applies to all new buildings and additions, where addition is defined per NECB Division A-1.4.1.2. This definition includes all new conditioned space that increases the building’s floor surface area by more than 10 m². This may take the form of additional storeys, increases to building footprint, infilling of existing atrium spaces or mezzanine areas.

For additions that increase building height or building area, there are multiple options available to the consultant to demonstrate NECB compliance. These generally do not require upgrades to the existing building systems unless the consultant team wants to use addition and existing building options as found in the respective related articles below. These additions will typically need to demonstrate compliance with all parts of the NECB.

Mezzanines and new floor area wholly contained within the existing building envelope may not substantially impact the existing building systems. In this case, the addition would require new lighting and mechanical subsystem(s) to meet the NECB for new floor areas only. Therefore, a typical mezzanine or infill atria addition needs to only demonstrate compliance for new lighting and mechanical subsystems that serve the addition (new floor area).
