Solstice Celebration this Sunday!

Sunday December 11th, 10:30AM
The Arts Center
300-G East Main St. Carrboro NC 27510

Please join us for a secular celebration of the Solstice. We'll be sharing stories and readings from community members, singing secular Christmas songs, and there'll be a potluck after the assembly. We won't have a speaker this month; our focus will be on our community, a quiet contemplation of the end of this year, and energizing ourselves for the year to come.

Kids will be invited to join in for the songs, and we'll have holiday-themed activities for them in the back when everyone's not singing.

Please RSVP on Meetup!

December Toy Drive

We'll be collecting toys in December for the Orange County Community Toy Chest. The Toy Chest is open to all low-income Orange County residents with children. Parents shop for gifts for their children at the Toy Chest just like shopping in a store. They are generally able to select 2-3 gifts per child including a variety of toys, books and clothing. Please bring new, unwrapped toys still in their packaging to the Assembly and we'll deliver them to the Toy Chest.

Potluck Signup

Our post-assembly reception will be an informal potluck. If you can bring a food item, please sign up here!

Upcoming Events

  • Sunday, December 18th, 10am - a family- and dog-friendly hike at Blackwood Farm Park in Hillsborough. We've hiked here before; it's full of gorgeous meadows and easily-navigable forested trails.
  • Coming in January: Sunday Assembly Conversation Group! One of our regular assembliers has volunteered to lead a monthly group for discussion and conversation outside of our regular Assemblies. "This will be a group within which curious, sincere people can discuss topics of interest, topics of importance, that are connected to the core of our lives, to being whole human beings who strive to live better, help others, wonder more." The group will offer a monthly opportunity for Sunday Assembly participants to explore questions big and small in a supportive environment. We'll announce the first meeting date at this Sunday's Assembly!

Non-Believer Survey

A friend of Sunday Assembly NYC is running a study of non-believers (atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, skeptics, etc.) - specifically, she wants to know more about how being involved in a secular community organization affects their lives. If you identify as a non-believer and would like to participate, you can follow this link to the survey. It should take about 10-15 minutes. Thanks!

Amazon Smile

While you're doing your holiday shopping, don't forget that you can have a small portion of your purchase donated to Sunday Assembly Chapel Hill at no cost to you! Use this link or search for Sunday Assembly Chapel Hill in the Amazon Smile dropdown. Thanks for your support!

A sneak peak at upcoming assemblies!

  • January 8th - our second anniversary! We'll be celebrating our second year as a community in fine style, with community testimonials from some of our long-term members, and some other surprises!
  • February 12th - a representative from the Chapel Hill Farmer's Market will be joining us to talk about year-round growing - appropriate for a chilly February day!
  • March 12th - the topic of this assembly will be Love & Acceptance. Two board members of PFLAG Triangle will be speaking about their organization, and their experience as parents.

Help Out!

Want to help out your assembly? Let us know! You can reply to this email to get in touch with the organizational team. We can use help with the following:

  • Ideas for speakers, readings, or songs - the organizing team are happy to find speakers, readings, moments of science, or themes for an assembly, but we're even happier to include your ideas. The more voices that are heard on stage, the better!
  • Hosts, readers, or singers - make your voices heard in a very literal way by getting up on stage. Don't worry, Sunday Assembly members make the most supportive audience ever!
  • Greeters or welcomers - we can always use help getting people oriented when they come in. We also like to have designated people to introduce themselves to newcomers and help them feel welcomed.
  • Setup or breakdown volunteers - those chairs won't unfold themselves!
  • Snack-bringers - bring along something healthy and/or tasty to share with everyone.
