Kristin School Executive PrincipalA brief final message from...
Tim Oughton, Executive Principal

As the 2016 academic year draws to a close I reflect back with considerable pride on the many outstanding achievements our students and staff have accumulated. We began the year with news of outstanding academic results, some of our best ever in both the IB Diploma and NCEA, and a real credit to the “class of 2015”. I am confident equally good news awaits us in the new year for the “class of 2016”. As the year progressed, further examples of Kristin excellence included;
  • Two staff winning NZ Independent School Scholarship awards for teaching excellence and international research
  • A very complimentary and successful independent review of our three International Baccalaureate programmes
  • Sailing Team winning the Auckland School Championships and in Term 4 the Trans-Tasman (Australasian) trophy for ‘420’ team racing
  • Junior Girls Water Polo team recently winning the National Schools’ Challenger Cup
  • 1st XI girl’s hockey team took out the North Harbour championship
  • 1st XI boy’s hockey team reaching the final of the Auckland wide schools competition
  • Three incredible major productions Hairspray (Senior School), Shrek (Middle School) and The Lion King (Junior School)
  • Olivia McTaggart breaking the NZ U17 pole vault record by 11cm
  • Macsen Sisam and Jackson Keon both winning their categories at the Young Sportsperson of the Year awards run by College Sport
  • Euphony success at the National Final of the Big Sing in Dunedin, awarded Gold along with the Auahi Kore award for best performance of a song in Maori and also the Hutt Trophy for best performance of a new work
  • Another successful Prefect Project to benefit Homai Primary School and the community in Manurewa with the official opening of their school pool
  • Alumni Lewis Fry receiving a Rhodes Scholarship
And the list goes on; in fact too long to make this final newsletter manageable!

And so to 2107 – what will the future hold?

Kristin’s motto “Future Ready” is an intriguing concept to unpack and define. It is actually becoming increasingly difficult as our dynamic and collaborative learning environments continue to evolve and the social impacts from the cyber world are becoming more and more influential. Kristin remains a community of people with shared beliefs. We believe in creating a world led by good people, who are invested in making the future better. We believe in fostering an enabling environment where people flourish. We believe in the power of choice and opportunity and we believe in strength through community, with love at its heart so that there are no barriers to learning. Such beliefs certainly support future readiness.

Kristin is a happy place in which young people and adults alike come to see and appreciate the gift of being truly and intensely alive! We develop good people who will lift New Zealand and make the world a better place. And so, a Kristin education is really two educations – one is how to make a living and the other how to make a life.

I wish you all a happy and fun filled holiday break, and a prosperous 2017. Thank you all for your part in this wonderful community.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Best Wishes,
Tim Oughton
Things to note...

Christmas Day Chapel Service
25 December, 9am in the Kristin School Chapel. All welcome.

Retail Shop Holiday Hours
The Retail Shop will be closed from Thursday 8 December. It will re-open Wednesday 4 January at 9am. Please note there will be reduced hours (9am-3pm) from 4-27 January and will return to standard hours (8am-4pm) from Tuesday 31 January.

Hold the Date - April 1. This is Not a Joke
Movie rating has changed - Wilderpeople is rated PG. Saturday 1 April next year will be a special night, with Kristin Family and Friends (KFF) planning an inaugural Open Air Cinema event at the school.

We have secured the right to show Hunt for the Wilderpeople (PG) under the stars, while younger children we will be viewing the Lego Movie (PG). We will be offering an all-inclusive ticket of entry to the movie and a snack bag – with a Gold Class option of preferential seating and food. A major UK cinema publication has just named Hunt for the Wilderpeople the best film of 2016. Wilderpeople topped Empire magazine's list of the 25 best movies of 2016, beating out the likes of Arrival and Spotlight. This will be a fun open-air event – so hold the evening of April 1 2017 in you calendar. Tickets on sale soon.

Thee are also limited opportunities available to sponsor this event. If you, or perhaps a company you own, is interested in this please email our Director of Marketing, mreynolds@kristin.school.nz.
