We've had our first snow of the season and a winter hummingbird is roosting outside our kitchen window. Meanwhile, work is at its busiest, the tree needs to be found and decorated, and the shopping finished. You know....the rush is on. Moving forward it'll be crazier before it's not, and I'm reminding myself often to keep making room for joy, and not to let life's tasks weigh me down. That's the goal.

WHAT'S UP

What's been up? Baby quilts, quilt show entries, and pondering about why I make. All the bee blocks have arrived, and I sorted out my own #2016bestnine (find yours at 2016bestnine.com). Secret sewing has commenced, and is still on schedule.

WORTH A READ

ROUND-UP

It was the Scrappy Bear Paw Baby Quilt by Jeni/In Color Order that caught my eye a few weeks ago and sparked my current interest in the Bear Paw block. Her tutorial, which makes a 39" x 39" quilt, is still calling my name. [jenib320]
Toni/[hoosiertoni] used Jeni's tutorial for her own even scrappier version, and I love the low-volume background she created.
Suzy/Suzy Quilts recent post about Scrappy Bear Paw included interesting history about the block and a link to the basic Bear Paw Quilt Block Pattern at
Fat Quarter Shop. She also shared a few of her favorite Bear Paw quilts, and I found myself equally smitten with Heidi/Fabric Mutt's Big Bear Cabin quilt. The big block, which is an appealing combination of prints and solids, also combines the Bear Paw with the Log Cabin block - a satisfying match for sure. [suzyquilts

The Bear Paw Oversize Baby Quilt by Susan/studio adventures is yet another example of a scrappy big-block Bear Paw, but with its four-patch center squares and deep golden background, it just has a special draw all its own.
Angie/Gnome Angel incorporated some fussy-cuts into her Scrappy Bear Paw Mini Quilt, and note her use of varied solids in each quarter-block.... a nice touch! [gnomeangel]
Check out Giuseppe/
[giucy_giuce]'s Instagram feed, and right away you're drawn in by COLOR. Alot of color. Earlier this year, he was featured on Bernina's we all sew - hop on over to get a closer look at his giant Bear Paw, made with Anna Maria Horner's beautiful prints on that grounding gray. Oh yeah.

ON TREND

'Tis the season to be admiring everyone's Christmas makes, especially items for the home such as stockings, pillows, and of course quilts. One currently popular quilt pattern is the Patchwork Tree using the tutorial by Amy/Diary of a Quilter. Shown is a lovely examply by Joan/[joandesan]. Amy gives directions for two block sizes on her blog {small and larger}, and you'll see quite a variety under the #patchworkforest hashtag on Instagram.

P.S. I happened upon the cleverest little daily calendar/notepad, designed to celebrate the good found in each day. Offered as a free download, check out Ashley Campbell's "Best of My Days 2017" from her blog Under the Sycamore.
