One battle won! 30km/h in Dublin City!
Love 30 is delighted with Monday’s decision of Dublin City Council to introduce 30 km/h speed limits on many more roads. The new limits will come into force within the canals on 31 March 2017 and in a number of suburbs at the end of May.
Here’s a link to a map of the new 30 km/h areas.
South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire counties are considering proposals for 30 km/h and public consultations are open in several other local authorities, including Cork, Galway, Mayo and Offaly.

Multi-million Euro Funding for Donegal / Derry Greenway
We have great news from the Wee Greenway Initiative in Donegal, initiated by our member Ronan Gallagher, who has said that the imminent announcement of approximately €14 million funding towards the construction of sections of the proposed greenway is to be welcomed. For over two years, the group has been canvassing local opinion around Inishowen and Derry and there is a growing desire to see such infrastructure funded and constructed.
This funding is expected to finance the construction of cycle / walking facilities from Derry to Buncrana and separately to Muff. Ronan made the point that infrastructure is not all about road development.
They will help improve the quality of life and health of those that use the proposed route, attract tourists to the area, and generate additional demand in the accommodation and catering sectors, creating much-needed employment in an area where unemployment remains high.'
Donegal County Council have been in the forefront of securing this funding. The Council was quick to recognise that to develop a sustainable transport model for the region, there needs to be a shift in our thinking. The announcement of funding also ties in with the Wee Greenway Initiative's report on a section of the proposed route, namely between Buncrana and Carndonagh. This report, which was made possible by a subsidy from the Strategic Development Fund of Donegal County Council, will officially be published on 19 December. It illustrates what could be achieved once the first phase has been completed.
Let’s wish this initiative well, and hopefully we will all soon be able to make this traffic free trip around the Inishowen Peninsula.

Dublin in Shake-up to Host World’s Largest Cycling Conference!
Dublin City Council together with Dublin Cycling Campaign / Cyclist.ie are bidding to host the world’s largest cycling conference, Velo-city, in 2019.
At this stage, Dublin City has been short-listed along with Helsinki in a two horse race to host this prestigious conference. Next year it will be held in Arnhem-Nijmegen in The Netherlands, when thousands of cycling experts, enthusiasts and advocates will descend on the twin cities to immerse themselves in all things cycling.
Imagine this happening in Dublin in 2019! It may well become a reality, as Dublin City Council and Fáilte Ireland have gotten behind the bid and are actively working to bring it here. As part of the bid process, a Bid Assessment Team from the European Cyclists’ Federation were in Dublin two weeks ago, to run the rule over Dublin’s bid and view Dublin’s cycling infrastructure and future plans. They examined the bid in detail, as well as meeting officials and politicians, from the Minister of Transport Shane Ross downwards.
The fact that we in Dublin made it into the second stage of the bid process is a tribute to the team who worked on it and the cycling plans for Dublin City. Dublin will know very soon if we have been successful in our head-to-head with Helsinki! Fingers crossed that we make it over the line and bring thousands of overseas cycling enthusiasts to Dublin in 2019!

December Public Meeting What Now for the S2S?

The National Transport Authority (NTA) have, at last, published suggested plans for the section of the Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) Greenway from Irishtown to Seapoint. These plans have been long awaited, and are now open for public consultation, so you can have your say! Dublin Cycling Campaign is delighted to host a major public meeting on the proposals, just 4 days before the public submissions are due to be made to the NTA.
We are delighted that Michael Collins, a long-time proponent and campaigner for the S2S route has agreed to present the latest proposals and to critically analyse what is being put before the public. There is much to praise about the latest proposals and much to be disappointed in! Come along on Monday 12th December next and find out what is being proposed and how and why you should make a formal submission to the NTA. |
Major Consultation on College Green
Dublin City Council coordinated a major citizen consultation evening on ideas for the future of the proposed College Green Plaza.
It was held in the Mansion House Round Room on 16th November last. Nearly 200 people participated, and many more could not be accommodated, who wished to participate. Dublin Cycling Campaign were well represented on the night, and many innovative and wonderful ideas emerged. The City Council are to be congratulated on the success of this major consultation approach, and we await the results of the night's discussion in a report due to issue before Christmas.
