Newsletter December 2016
December 2016, and we have come to the end of another great year for music in Townsville.  We are so proud of ACVC’s involvement in creating such a dynamic, vibrant city.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM was held on Sunday 4th December 2016 at the Annandale Community Centre.  It was followed by a delicious afternoon tea and the opportunity to mix and mingle.
The meeting was well attended, and we have some new committee members to introduce to you.   We  also say farewell to others who were on the 2016 committee and are not able to continue as committee members.

2017 Committee elected at the AGM:

President:  Cris Dall'Osto
Secretary:  Peter Cristaudo
Treasurer: Deb Elms
Committee Members:
  • Marie Bond
  • Kayleen McLean
  • Sandra James
  • Stephanie Smith
  • Kurt Rehbein

In welcoming those who accepted a position on the committee, the new President said that it was a well-balanced group, made up of people with the dedication and the skills to ensure that the competition would continue to be a rewarding experience for the entrants.
We welcome the following four new members to the committee:

Welcome: Deb Elms
After being introduced to the competition in 2016, Deb was eager to become involved.  She joined the committee in the position of Treasurer.  Deb comes from a business background and has worked in the finance, electricity and tertiary education sectors.  She has a B.Bus (Mkting & HRM) and a Diploma in Financial Services.

Welcome: Stephanie Smith
The committee is excited to welcome the young and vibrant Stephanie.  As a pianist, Steph was honoured to attend the International Piano Festival at the University of Florida in 2015.  She is also a past ACVC entrant.  Steph has a journalism and communication background which will make her a valuable member of the ACVC team.
Welcome:  Kurt Rehbein
Councillor Kurt Rehbein represents Division 7 on the Townsville City Council. Born in Townsville and raised in Ayr, Kurt’s background includes working five years for the RAAF and ten years with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.  He is a lover of music and he currently plays in a local well known Guitar Orchestra. He is proud to be associated with the Australian Concerto & Vocal Competition.
Welcome: Sandra James
After being a supporter of the competition since the early 80's, Sandra has now joined the management committee.  During her employment at the Community Information Centre, Sandra developed a broad knowledge of the Townsville Community. She co-edited the monthly Arts eBulletin distributed by the Centre and was a member of the team that set up the web-based North Queensland Arts Directory, giving her particular knowledge of the arts scene in the region.

We farewell those leaving the management committee:

Farewell: Bob Haynes
Bob joined the ACVC Committee in 2015, and we thank him for conducting all presidential duties with enthusiasm and commitment and also for being instrumental in raising the prize money for the three place getters in the Vocal Section. Bob is planning to do some travelling and visiting in 2017 preventing him from continuing to be on the committee. We know that we can call on Bob for whatever he can do for the competition in the future.

Farewell: Rose Fava
Thank you also to  Rose for her invaluable efforts during her time with us, particularly with registering the competitors and collating the scores for the 2016 competition. We will be taking advantage of her offer to do what she can to assist us in 2017.

Farewell: Kevin Price
Thanks to Kevin for his creative input and injecting the committee with his valuable youthful perspective. Had he not moved from Townsville, he would certainly be a part of the 2016/2017 committee.

Farewell: Carol Dall'Osto
Carol has been the heart and soul of the committee from the very beginning of the competition in 1980. In 2015 it was time for Carol to step down as Competition Director when Katy Frewen-Lord became available to take that position. Carol was a committee member in 2015/2016 and has now taken another step towards a calmer life. Carol remains available to offer any assistance that she can happily offer to something that has been a big part of her life.

Artistic Director
In 2015 Katy Frewen-Lord took over the position of Competition Director from Carol Dall’Osto. In keeping with the duties that Katy has to undertake the committee has changed the role title from “Competition Director” to what was thought to be the more appropriate title of “Artistic Director”.
Katy has a central role in the Competition; she is the person responsible for adjudicators and accompanists and all other matters relating to questions of music.
The best gifts in life will never be found under a Christmas tree, those gifts are friends, family and the ones you love.

We wish you and your loved ones a Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year
