The Hub-a-dub-dub
A note from Denise

Hello and welcome to the 2nd issue of our new and improved newsletter.

In this issue you will find out more about some of the music services programmes together with features  from partners … and ...  We also have a link to some YouTube clips featuring hub partners so you can get to know some of the amazingly varied music that we all produce.

In other hub news we have now had the first meeting of the hub steering group. We have a group of about 12 people including primary and secondary headteachers, primary and secondary heads of music, representatives of a further education institution, representatives of Southwark Council, senior management of the music service, young people and representatives of partner hub organisations. We discussed how the hub should move forward and how we can provide musical opportunities for all Southwark young people, not just those who attend a particularly musical school or who have parents who are willing to support their children’s musical learning by paying large amounts of money. We will be continuing to discuss this at our next meeting as well as exploring the idea of having a staff member of the music service take on a particular hub focus meaning they are a go between for all hub members. We will keep you in touch with the group’s progress and if you would like to add ideas to the groups agenda please do let me know.

The rest of the newsletter is self explanatory – I hope you enjoy reading it.

All the very best

Nursing Home Tour

Eleven of Southwark’s most talented young musicians are touring local nursing homes with violins, guitars, saxophones, percussion, a cello, trumpets and a clarinet. They are performing an eclectic program including Three Little Birds (Bob Marley), London is the Place For Me (Lord Kitchener), The Firebird’s Finale (Stravinsky), and the best-loved Que Sera (Doris Day).

They have been well received by the residents, many of whom have danced and sung along - one gentleman even started doing air guitar on his walking stick! Nursing home staff testify to how music revives memories, brings people together, and often gets them singing and dancing - no wonder it has such a feel-good factor! Southwark Music Service hopes that the tour will show the next generation of musicians the positive impact they can make with their talents and inspire them to use their music in the community for years to come.

‘It [performing for nursing home residents] was a brand new experience for me. I’ve never felt a connection between me and an audience member so strong before. Usually when performing I can see members of the audience enjoying the music but I felt like when I performed here, they weren’t just enjoying the music but also enjoying our presence more than a normal audience would. I had an audience member look at me like they wanted to hear about my life ambitions and how school is. A truly unique experience.’ – Stanley Sorrell, percussionist, Kingsdale School.

‘It was a really unique experience which I’ve really learnt a lot from’ - Esme Cargill, singer and jazz saxophonist, Kingsdale School.

Southwark Orchestra Day

On Monday 30th January, more than 250 primary and secondary school pupils from across the borough came together at the Southbank Centre to share and make music together under the expert guidance of SYO conductor Scott Stroman. It was a fantastic day of music and the young people of Southwark were inspirational.

'Without music, life would be a mistake.' Freidrich Nietzsche

'Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.' Maya Angelou

Maxine Haffner: 'Does anyone know anything about the Mona Lisa?'
Child: 'Yes. Leonardo Di Caprio painted it. He's dead now... but he painted it before he died.'
Anonymous child

'If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.' Albert Einstein

'We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.' Arthur O'Shaughnessy

Tuned In London

In mid December, a Tuned In London audience, filling the house in its well hidden cinema location, at the end of a labyrinthine corridor within the walls of Sands Films, Rotherhithe, was up out of the comfort of its sofas, armchairs and pews, dancing, clapping, getting on down to the mighty fine Blues performed by Brixton-born and bred musician Errol Linton and his band.  Performers don't usually hail from Brixton. The incredible gig marked 5 years nearly to the day since Errol first came to be a part of what has become an extraordinarily rich and varied programme, featuring world and folk music from all corners of the globe.

Initially housed at the Brunel Museum, two years ago Eleanor Thorn named the programme Tuned In London and accepted Sands Films' invitation to base the programme with them.  The cosiness of their exquisite home-made cinema, more often the home of a thriving film club, has made the move a very successful one.  The building oozes both history and creativity and from the moment musicians and audience members alike cross the threshold they are inspired and enthused by the feel and look of this very special place. That's proving a wonderful recipe!  Browse the picture library while you wait, or sit at gingham-clothed tables in the kitchen before selecting your sofa in the cinema where some of the very best musicians from London and beyond have been treating those in the know to delightfully intimate, largely acoustic gigs.  No money please for the tea and coffee you are offered on arrival.

The next series runs fortnightly from Wed 22nd Feb till Wed 19th April and will feature music from Scotland, Romania, Iceland, Senegal and Spain.  This series will feature more South East Londoners than usual: Fred Thomas, multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire will perform with kora-player Kadialy Kouyate; Osp, Icelandic singer songwriter who will be launching her album; Esther Weekes, singer and flamenco dancer, whose band Jazzolea's members will be travelling from Seville, is from Camberwell!
