Happy Holidays!

Holiday greetings from the Canadian Council on Social Development and the Community Data Program Team!

We are thankful for another year of great work on behalf of communities across the country. Our network has never been stronger - we have 30+ consortia, over 300 member organizations and 2000+ users across Canada!

The new year will be exciting and full of new data - we are looking forward to the Long Form Census data, new tools and investments for the Community Data Program and our Annual General Meeting in Kingston 2017. Again, we thank you for your work!

Happy Holidays to All!  Joyeuses Fêtes à tous et à toutes!

Michel, Mike, Mary, Vivianne, Katherine, Peggy, and Julie

User survey

Earlier this month we conducted a Survey of Users’ Data Needs in order to better inform our data acquisition decisions over the next five years. We thank all those who participated in the survey! We take all comments and suggestions openly and strive to improve the Community Data Program for all users.

Some positive comments by CDP members:
  • "I am amazed that there are some regions and metropolitan areas in Canada without consortiums, as the Community Data Program is such a great resource."
  • "Every time I have called with a question I have been given excellent service, by really patient people who are great at explaining how things work."
  • "Great for us because it is: 1) local data; 2) current and up-to-date; 3) relevant to the work that we do; and 4) can be updated regularly!"
  • "This is a great program - and even though we might not always be able to use all the excellent data we have access to, its availability is important to us. Thank you for running this program."

New website resources

DIY Community Infographics

These DIY Infographic templates designed by the CCSD offers CDP members an easy-to- use tool to report on a number of important social development themes for any individual community, using data available from the CDP.

Each template allows the user to easily type in data and information about any community at any level of geography. Click here for DIY Infographic instructions

The data variables can be downloaded from the tables listed in the above link, or through a new data access tool

Map-based Data Access Tool

This map-based data access tool provides CDP members an easy way to download data variables for the DIY Infographics, popular data variables and selected topics.

Instead of downloading full tables of data containing geographies for the entire country, CDP members can select a geography (municipalities and custom neighbourhoods where available) and download data variables for that selected area! All download files are in Excel format.

Try the prototype tool and download currently available data variables for the Village of 100 and Regional Profile DIY Infographic templates! Click the link below for the tool.

The catalogue

The Data by Theme is a new search based on key terms relating to the data product, allowing users to quickly look for selected topics and data.

In addition, there is a Data Index with a data map and glossary as an excel file that is used to define the variables from the Data By Theme search. You can glance at the data map to see what themes the data covers and what variables fall within the themes.

Community Profiles, 2016

These Community Profiles highlight a wide variety of indicators related to the social determinants of health (i.e. the status and living conditions of children and their families) and child outcomes. The indicators are presented in a storyboard format to give a more visual representation of the data available in each community.

Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW)

The Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) launched its 3rd national report: How are Canadians really doing? The report compared eight domains of wellbeing from 1994 to 2014 and found a massive gap between GDP and our wellbeing.

Statistics Canada's independence

On December 7, a bill was proposed to reinforce Statistics Canada's independence through legislative amendments to the Statistics Act. Some targeted amendments include removing the threat of imprisonment for those who refused the surveys, creating an Advisory Council and transferring census records to the Library and Archives Canada.
