Member Care Update--January 2017
Expanding the global impact of member care

Special Issues on Member Care
Journals and Magazines (1983-2017)
Overview
Twenty special journal and magazine issues over a 34 year period...These are important metrics that reflect the ongoing development of member care in mission. This Update takes a closer look at these 20 special issues and shares links for accessing them: some are for free online and others can be purchased in pdf/hard copies at special rates.

Part One features the just-published issue by the Journal of Psychology and Theology (JPT) on "Psychology and Missions" (December 2016 with another issue scheduled for June 2017). Part Two lists the 20 special issues by journal/magazine and by date of publication. Part Three then goes into more detail by listing the table of contents for the special issues.

Collectively, all 20 special issues give us a good sense of the many colleagues and topics that have helped to shape the member care field over the years. There are surely more special issues that we are not aware of, including in other languages and/or with a special topical focus. And they are all foundational for the literature that is to come, including perhaps a special global journal/periodical devoted to member care issues. We finish with some reflections on being inspired and guided by the literature in member care.

“Beginning in 1983, the Journal of Psychology and Theology has published four special editions devoted to the topic of psychology and missions; on average, these issues were released at a rate of two per decade (i.e., 1983, 1987, 1993, and 1999). After a 17-year hiatus, this fifth psychology and missions special edition of JPT provides an opportunity to reflect on what we have learned thus far through the almost 70 articles published in JPT since 1973 on the interrelationship of psychological and theological concepts—all to the fulfillment of Christ’s command to make disciples of all nations. To do so, we will follow Hall & Schram’s (1999) outline in their introductory article to the fourth special edition: looking back to the past to consolidate gains, looking around to the present to note current trends, and looking forward to the future to identify gaps.” Excerpt from the Introduction (free online/pdf), Dr. Nancy Crawford and Dr. David Wang, Guest Editors

Personal Reflections
Being Inspired and Guided
by Member Care Literature
Part One in this Update began with the opening paragraph from the Introduction (free online/pdf) in the latest special issue on Psychology and Missions in the Journal of Psycholgy and Theology (JPT). It now closes with the final paragraph from this Introduction. We hope this special issue of JPT circulates widely and inspires many colleagues to undertake scholarly writing and research in member care. Likewise we hope that all the special issues included in this Update will be a valuable source or encouragement, reflection, and guidance for member care--perhaps pointing towards the development of a special global journal/periodical devoted to member care. We believe it is crucial to understand our historical foundations as we carefully consider our future and the challenges and opportunities to bring hope and healing to our troubled world.

"The above overview of the psychology and mission literature demonstrates that the themes noted in Hall and Schram’s (1999) introductory article [to JPT special issue four] remain relevant even now, 17 years later. This begs the question—why, then, produce a fifth special issue? In addition to presenting updated information in the areas of assessment, intervention, global initiatives, and Telemental Health, the real-world impact of such special issues has been felt in my own (Crawford) life, thus making this issue a special labor of love, with the hope that this work will make a similar impact in the lives of others. In the late 1980s, as a missionary entering graduate school in clinical psychology, I used many of the articles from the first and second special issues [of JPT] as resources for my papers. Then, as a recently graduated master’s level therapist serving in a boarding school in Kenya, I devoured the third special issue in 1993. Those articles greatly informed the mental health care I was providing to missionary children. Later as I prepared my dissertation proposal (which was inspired by Beck’s 1986 pilot study on women in missions), I poured over Jensma et al.’s (1997) article underscoring the importance and the difficulty of doing research with a missionary population and followed each of her suggestions. The fruit of these efforts was a good-enough return rate for a valid study (and a published article in JPT in 2005). If other studies are inspired by the articles in this fifth special edition, and missionary care is enhanced in some way, then its purpose will have been realized." (Nancy Crawford and David Wang, Introduction to the special issue on Psychology and Missions, JPT, 2016)
