AACTA: SIXTH ANNUAL FILM AND TELEVISION AWARDS
Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge has swept the board at the 6th Annual AACTA Awards, taking home five awards on the night including Best Film. Gibson also scooped Best Direction, while the film's lead and supporting actors, Andrew Garfield and Hugo Weaving, were also honoured for their work. "I need to thank Australia for this film, all the way up and down it's a homegrown film," Gibson told the audience about the movie which was made in New South Wales. AUSTRALIAN FILM MAKES OSCARS FOREIGN FILM SHORT-LIST
An Australian film is one step closer to winning an Oscar, with the news that Tanna has advanced to the next round of voting in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The romance, directed by Bentley Dean and Martin Butler, and made in collaboration with the Yakel people from the remote volcanic island of Tanna, Vanuatu, was one of nine films short-listed from a record field of 85 submissions. TEASER TRAILER: HACKSAW RIDGE Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an Army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy line, braved fire while tending to soldiers, and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers.
