IFRC President congratulates Viet Nam Red Cross Society for 70 years of humanitarian excellence

ASEAN's Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management, AHA Centre, Celebrates 5-Year Anniversary

On October 17, IFRC joined the celebration of AHA Centre's 5-year anniversary in Jakarta. The AHA Centre is an inter-governmental organisation which aims to facilitate cooperation and coordination among ASEAN Member States and with the United Nations and international organisations for disaster management and emergency response. Click to read more

ASEAN Regional Exercise (ARDEX) 2016 in Brunei Darussalam

From 28 November to 1 December, staff from the National Societies of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia joined the latest ASEAN Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise (ARDEX) in Bandar Seri Begawan. ARDEX provides an opportunity for member states to practice, evaluate and review the ASEAN Standby Arrangements and Standard Operating Procedures (SASOP) as well as the recently-approved ASEAN Joint Disaster Response Plan (AJDRP)

ASEAN Youth Regional Workshop for the development of Youth Development Index

This month, IFRC and the Southeast Asia Youth Network (represented by Mr. Novey Robert Dolde, Philippine Red Cross Youth Council President) were invited to attend a workshop for the Development of ASEAN Youth Development Index (YDI) in Jakarta, Indonesia, to contribute to the first ASEAN Youth Development Index report. Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Training 'Writeshop'

The global Gender and Diversity Network have held a 'writeshop' in Beirut to develop a training module on the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence. The course is for IFRC and National Society programme managers on integrating SGBV interventions into their work, and will be rolled out in 2017. Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Workshop on Disability Inclusion and Victim Assistance in Southeast Asia

Last month in Bangkok the Thai Red Cross Society, ICRC, IFRC and Norwegian Red Cross came together to host a workshop on disability inclusion and victim assistance in Southeast Asia. Participants developed a plan of action which included commitments to increas action on treaty promotion, risk reduction and victim assistance. Click to read more

Updates from the ECHO-funded Building Urban Resilience in Southeast Asia Project 

Last month, knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) questionnaires for schools in Cambodia and the Philippines were being finalized, with a view to align the KAP questionnaires for communities in all four countries under the Building Urban Resilience in Southeast Asia project. Training on Psychosocial Support for Community Practitioners

In a training organized by Thai Red Cross Society and IFRC last month,32 participants from Thai Red Cross and Lao Red Cross, related line ministries and civil society organizations were trained in key topics such as pyscholosocial impacts of crises or disasters, community-based psychosocial support, applying psychological first aid and the particular needs of children. Thai Red Cross equips Burmese migrant workers with life-saving techniques

What would you do if you see someone choking or fainting? What would you do if you were a migrant working in a foreign country, with limited knowledge of local language, of available emergency services and no community networks? To address the needs of migrant workers, Thai Red Cross have launched First Aid education for Burmese and Thai domestic workers. Click to read more

Lao emergency operation review and lessons learned workshop

In the aftermath of severe floods in northern Lao PDR in August, Lao Red Cross, with the support of the IFRC, has successfully implemented a 3-month disaster relief emergency fund (DREF) operation, addressing the immediate needs of 5,160 people in 23 villages. Click to read more.

Malaysian Red Crescent Society training gender and diversity in emergencies

In Malaysia, the Red Crescent conducted two staff trainings focused on the ‘7 moves’ to gender and diversity in emergencies. A key goal was to familiarize participants with the IFRC Minimum Standard Commitments to gender and diversity a well as institutional protection mechanisms, such as anti-harassment guidelines and codes of conduct. Launch of 'Disaster Risk Reduction and Law: Checklist Assessment Report' in Indonesia

Indonesia continues to demonstrate global leadership on disaster risk management, with the recent launch of its Strengthening Law and Disaster Risk Reduction in Indonesia: Checklist Assessment Report in Jakarta. The research - undertaken by Indonesia Red Cross (PMI) and IFRC, with financial support provided by the Government of Canada and Canadian Red Cross - provides an assessment of Indonesia’s legal and policy framework for disaster risk reduction, using the Checklist on the Law and DRR. 'I’m Clean, I’m Healthy': A hand washing campaign by Palang Merah Indonesia

On November 10, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), in partnership with PT. Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors, visited Elementary School No.13, Padang, West Sumatra to train 250 students on how to wash their hands correctly. This is part of PMI's "Let's wash your hands, I'm clean, I'm healthy" campaign. Click to read more

No more walking in the river: PMI and community build a temporary bridge

On November 15, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Sukabumi Regency worked together with the residents of Kampung Cikarae, Cipamingkis Village, Sukabumi, West Java, to build an emergency bridge to re-establish access that was cut off by flash floods. For the last six days,187 local residents were isolated by the bridge collapse, walking through the river to take their children to school in the neighboring village. Click to read more

Housing, land and property rights in shelter assistance in the Philippines

The Philippine Red Cross, with IFRC, has held a national level rollout of the IFRC pilot training, “Regulatory Barriers to Shelter and Settlements in Disaster Contexts in Asia Pacific”. Partner National Societies Japanese Red Cross and British Red Cross, as well as shelter cluster members IOM, Habitat for Humanity and Catholic Relief Services, joined the discussion. Click to read more

Bringing disaster law to the people in the Philippines

Advocacy for better disaster laws and policies needs more voices from the community level. The Philippine Red Cross-IFRC Disaster Law Programme has teamed up with a consortium of partner National Societies, led by Finnish Red Cross and supported by EuropeAID, to create information, education and communication (IEC) material. The kit includes key messages for disaster law and tips for inclusive community planning. Click to read more

Cambodia disaster law dissemination: moving from words to action

In 2015 a new national disaster management law was signed in Cambodia. In addition to a strong focus on response, the new law calls for the integration of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation measures into development planning. Last month, Cambodia Red Cross, IFRC and the National Committee for Disaster Management discussed next steps in the implementation and dissemination of the law in 2017. Click to read more

Increased access of WASH infrastructure in Cambodia supported by IFRC and Cartier Charitable Foundation

From November 8-9, Cambodian Red Cross and IFRC hosted an evidence-based behaviour change training in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Thirty participants from seven Southeast Asia National Societies, Swiss Red Cross and IFRC were trained in the Risks, Attitudes, Norms, Abilities, and Self-regulation (RANAS) approach. Singapore Red Cross launches emotive campaign

Singapore Red Cross has launched a campaign to raise awareness of its local humanitarian services and to drive fundraising. Benjamin William, Secretary General/CEO said, “The campaign tells the stories of those who have fallen through the cracks. By showing how our local community services help make life better for our beneficiaries, we hope more people will come forward to donate and support us in providing much needed aid for vulnerable individuals and families.” Click to read more

Stories of resilience to light up Marina Bay

Singapore Red Cross has launched a festive fundraiser, ChariTrees @ Marina Bay, lighting up their iconic promenade with stories of resilient individuals and families on Christmas trees. Aimed at raising awareness on the needs of the disadvantaged, ChariTrees celebrates strength in adversity during the festive season. Corporate partners raised S$314,000 for SRC and local grantmaker Community Chest through tree adoption and donation. Click to read more

New building to support expansion of local community services

On October 6, Singapore Red Cross Chairman Tee Tua Ba and SRC Secretary General/CEO Benjamin William presented plans for a new building, to support the expansion of the National Society's services and outreach to the local community. The Chairman and Secretary-General also briefed the President on SRC’s involvement in IFRC's global ‘One Billion Coalition for Resilience’ initiative. Click to read more

Timor-Leste Red Cross organize First Aid training for journalists

From November 15-16, the communications department of the Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL), together with the the International Committee of the Red Cross, held a two-day training for journalists in the capital, Dili. Seven journalists from six media outles in Timor-Leste took part in the training, which was also attended by CVTL branch coordinators from 13 districts. Click to read more

Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society producing 1000 Certified First Aid Instructors by 2017

First Aid Academy provides accredited training and the academy has trained around 570 first aid instructors. In the forum on ‘First Aid For Everyone & Everywhere', the Secretary General of Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRC), Sheikh Kadir, expressed his hope that newly certified instructors could train more people in communities to save lives. BDRC aims high in promoting the importance of First Aid responses at the community level. Click to read more

Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent’s Food Aid Programme on the International Day for Disaster Reduction 2016

On the last International Day for Disaster Reduction, Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRC) held Projek Ikhlas 3.0, aiming to help those in need during times of emergency. The project also serves a platform for members of the public to provide assistance, as well as raise awareness among the community members to become alert and vigilant in emergency times. Unseen Unheard: gender based violence in disasters. Case studies from Asia Pacific

The case studies provide an overview of gender-based violence within the context of selected countries in Asia Pacific, as well as presenting findings and key recommendations with regards to 1) awareness and understanding on GBV occurrence during disasters; 2) availability and access to services; 3) safety and security and; 4) livelihoods and migration. Strengthening Law and Disaster Risk Reduction in Indonesia: Checklist Assessment Report

Research undertaken by Indonesia Red Cross (PMI) and IFRC provides an assessment of Indonesia’s legal and policy framework for disaster risk reduction and recommendations moving forward. While there has been huge advancements in Indonesia since the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, there needs to be a greater priority placed on implementation, particularly at the village level and ensuring communities are actively engaged in decision making. Click here to download
