Welcome to the latest edition of the Orange Regional Museum newsletter. The newsletter is a way to keep you informed of forthcoming events, openings and current programs.

Orange Regional Museum opens with new exhibition

Journeys: people place stories opened on 19th November 2017 and communicates stories of the regions people, place and history through time. Everyone has a story of their journey to Orange, whether they arrived to live in Orange last week, or six or 60 generations ago, or indeed are visiting Orange as tourists.

Through this exhibition the museum will attract the interests of diverse audiences. Residents and school students will recognize people, places and familiar stories from around the region. Wiradjuri culture, people and place are represented in the museum through objects, images and history. The themes European exploration and settlement describe the journeys of the explorers over the Blue Mountains and the settlers who followed in their wake to establish large sheep and cattle runs. Shepherds and fencing are mentioned with examples of the types of wire used over the last century and a half. Did you know it was the fence that superseded the guardians of sheep?

The gold rush at nearby Ophir in 1851, transformed the location originally known as Yorkey's Corner to an international community consisting of miners, stores, hotels, blacksmiths and sly grog shops. Journeys interprets the origins of the Orange Regional Museum and invites visitors to explore and experience the sporting history of this region and the influence that migrants have made to the region.

Learn about Mt Canobolas and its prehistoric volcanic eruptions. Make your own volcano and watch as it explodes!

This program is run in conjunction with Orange Regional Museum’s new exhibition Journeys: people place stories. Through this exhibition and accompanying programs the museum will engage all age groups with the history and culture of the region. Volcanoes will engage children with the significance of Mt Canobolas and the science behind its formation.

Public Lecture: Wiradjuri Lives

Thurs 16 Feb, 5pm-9pm
West Room, Orange Regional Gallery

Dr Michael Bennett will discuss some of the little known aspects of Orange Aboriginal history including stories of Wiradjuri resilience, the contribution of Aboriginal people to the pastoral industry, the role of trackers in subduing the bushranging epidemic of the 1860s and the lives of important Wiradjuri ancestors such as Fanny (Banjo Patterson’s Aboriginal nanny), Jimmy Clements and Kitty Hanley.

Wentworth Mine Open Days
The next Wentworth Mine open weekend will be Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th January, 10am-2.30pm. Discover the story of goldmining at Lucknow, from its early stages in the 1850s, until its closure in the 1950s. More information, http://wentworthmine.orangemuseum.com.au/

Mini Volcanoes ready for School Holiday programs

Orange Regional Museum staff have hit the ground running following the installation and opening of the first exhibition. Since November, I have been working with the existing group of volunteers who have been diligently undertaking the cataloguing of the impressive collections at Bloomfield Hospital and the Orange War Memorial Museum.

The Bloomfield Hospital collection volunteers have already catalogued over 1500 items, ranging from medical equipment, nursing uniforms, patient-made shoes and laundry baskets to leisure and recreation equipment: everything that could be possibly used by a self-sufficient and long-lived institution. With the end of the documentation process in our sights, we are beginning to look at the preservation and storage of the collection.

The Orange War Memorial Museum, situated in the Ex-services Memorial Hall on Anson Street, is one of Orange’s hidden gems. The Museum contains an impressive array of relics and memorabilia from wars and conflicts that have been fought by and impacted on residents of Orange. The volunteers have catalogued hundreds of items, some of which you can find online at: https://ehive.com/collections/5886/orange-war-memorial-museum

Work continues on uploading more of the collection to the publically accessible on-line catalogue.
In addition to the documentation of Orange’s other heritage collection, Orange Regional Museum is also in the process of cataloguing its own collections. Our tireless volunteers have catalogued over 300 objects which are now being added to an electronic database in readiness for online access – watch this space!

The next collection earmarked for documentation is the rich collection generously gifted to the Orange Regional Museum from Electrolux – some of which you can find on display in Journeys: people place stories. Staff and volunteers will be venturing to the museum’s off-site collection store to document some of the larger items.

Learning at the Museum

Bookings now open for Term 1 2017

To coincide with the new exhibition Journeys: people place stories Orange Regional Museum are offering a range of curriculum based learning programs designed to provide students with a hands on understanding of the history and landscape of Orange, the region and Australia. Programs are targeted at K-6 but options are available for secondary groups.

Casting call for objects for Education Collection

The Orange Regional Museum is wanting to build a small hands-on collection that will be used for teaching and education. Objects will provide a hands-on approach to learning in the museum. The museum is looking for a range of objects that are not too large or precious or valuable and that connect to the following themes:

Early surveying – compass, measuring chain, mapping tools
Prospecting – gold pan, pick or a shovel
1930-60s – old carpentry tools and hairdressing items, old toys, period style hats or suitcases
Early Agriculture tools – small pieces of old fence wire (not barbed), or a fence strainer

If you have any objects that might be suitable, please contact the museum to discuss the possible gift of your object to the museum.
