Hi All!

Here’s your weekly dose of FIVER FRIDAY, a list of what I've found useful or informational this week concerning education. I'll be taking a break over the holidays, so your next Fiver Friday will arrive on January, Friday the 13th! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

What I'm reading--

While We Weren't Looking, Snapchat Revolutionized Social Networks.

Idea from a book I read--

The authors of the book Leading Impact Teams mentioned something called "Project Aristotle," which was Google's attempt to build the perfect team. Find out more about this quest here. (Spoiler: Group norms were the keys to improving Google's teams.)

Something I'm excited about--

A few years ago I read a book entitled Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. The book is fantastic--with ideas which everyone would benefit from reading. Michael Lewis, author of such books as Moneyball and The Big Short, just published a new book about Daniel Kahneman and his colleague Amos Tversky entitled The Undoing Project. The relationship between these two men is fascinating, and their research challenged long-held beliefs about human nature and the way the mind works. This is a must read for anyone in education.

Tip of the week--

I've greatly benefited from the wisdom of Stoic thinkers such as Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus. Educators experience adversity in a myriad of ways, and Stoic advice is very helpful for people at school sites. You can find a good primer for what I'm describing here. (Warning, there's profanity in the post to which I've linked.)

Quote I'm pondering--

“If you wish to improve, be content to appear clueless or stupid in extraneous matters.”--Epictetus
