Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Families,

The past few years, Summer of Summit (the summer program offered at Summit campuses) has served to enable our students to further explore their passions, get on track or ahead with their school work, and spend time with their school community over the summer months.

This year at Summit, we are rethinking how we should spend those Summer months.  We want to ensure that we are fully utilizing the time to prepare for the year ahead. As a result, the regular Summer of Summit program will not be offered during the Summer of 2017.

We know that some of our families have come to expect the Summer of Summit option when the regular school year ends, which is why we wanted to make you aware of the change as soon as possible.

We also understand that Summer of Summit has been an opportunity for some students to continue working on incomplete course grades, and so we would encourage you to talk to your student about the importance of staying on track. However, if your student is in a situation where they are falling behind, your mentor will be in touch with a detailed plan to help them meet our expectations in time for the new school year.

Outside of school, Summer is an important time for students to find enriching experiences that contribute to their personal development. They can do this through a job, internship or extracurricular activity. We encourage you to make a plan with your student for the Summer months, and reach out to your mentor if you need support.

As always, please also reach out to us if you have questions about your child’s progress this year, or if you need support using the PLP.

We are always working on improving our school and staying in communication with students and families about our priorities and programming. We will be in touch as soon as we have any updates, but in the meantime, thank you for your support.

Best,
Chris Lewine & Drew Moriates

NEWS FROM THE EPO

Thank You for A GREAT 2016!

Many thanks to all of the Everest families for your support in the first half of this school year. We are a small school that truly needs volunteers to help do everything that we want to. We have done a lot already this year:

  • We had a very successful All School Camping Trip in August with lots of parent volunteers driving and chaperoning.
  • We have raised an amazing $57,610 so far this year! We are well on our way to reaching our goal of raising $75,000!
  • We hosted an All School Halloween Potluck in October
  • We hosted an Open House in November for new families.
  • We hosted monthly Teacher Appreciation Luncheons.
  • We hosted a few evening EPO (Everest Parent Organization) meetings...look for more of these in the new year.
  • We are now providing a Spanish translation of our weekly newsletter.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2017. Some of the events coming up include:

  • Everest Community Night on February 2nd.
  • Study Trips for 9th-11th graders will be March 9-10 (we will be asking for drivers to sign up in the new year...please mark those dates on your calendar, we need you!).
  • New Family Welcome on Saturday, May 13th
  • Celebrate Everest in May

Please continue to volunteer, and if you haven't yet, please don't hesitate to do it in the new year. We need you!

Enjoy the holidays with your family and thank you for your support.

Everest Community Night: Celebrate Our Diverse Community
We hope that you will put this event on your calendar (February 2, 2017 at 7pm) and join us!

Students, teachers, and families are all encouraged to participate in any or all of the three aspects of our Community Night celebrating the diversity of Everest:

1) Sharing - From clubs, to passions, to different religions and heritages -- we'll have tables set up all along the halls of Everest where you can share your diversity with everyone.
2) Performances - Have something to perform? Please let us know if you would like to sing, dance, give a speech, etc....we want to celebrate everybody and can't wait to see you on the stage! (email: lindamburt@gmail.com)
3) Food - Hungry? An event like this would not be complete without food and drinks that represent all our various cultures. Bring your favorite dish to share.

“Diversity” is a concept that is emphasized in the first few words of Everest’s mission. This event is a way for us to bring together students, families, and faculty to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. Each member of our community brings their own identity to our school, including things that we have in common and things that make us unique. Both aspects - our similarities and our differences - are worth recognizing and celebrating.

Please save the date - Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 7-8:30pm.

Everest Athletics Update
A little help, please!

The Girls and Boys Basketball teams could use your help!  We are looking for scorekeeping help at our 5-6 home games, which take place at Sequoia High School in Gym #2.  We would be happy to train you to run the clock, shot clock, and/or scorebook.   If you are interested, please contact us at everestphsathletics@gmail.com

Get Ready for Spring Baseball and Softball!

Time to start thinking about Everest Spring Sports......we will have Boys Baseball and Girls Softball teams!  Get your physical now, as all athletes must have that done and a completed sports packet turned in before they are eligible to tryout for the Everest athletics program. Please download the updated packet off of the everest.summitps.org/community-partners/athletics.  You can also pick up a copy in the new flyer folders by the teachers lounge entrance.  Students interested in playing winter sports should turn in the packet as soon as possible!   Please contact the Everest Athletics Directors at everestphsathletics@gmail.com if you have any questions or need any help.

Message From Superintendent Jim Lianides
Dear Parents:

I am retiring at the end of June in 2017 after seven years as SUHSD superintendent and 39 years in public education.  The Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees has contracted with Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) Executive Search to support the Board in its effort to recruit a new superintendent who will begin service to the district in July 2017.

HYA is asking district parents to participate in a survey that will provide valuable information to the SUHSD board in the search process.  The link to the survey is below and can be accessed from the front page of our website  (www.seq.org).  Please complete the survey by December 19 as HYA will begin its analysis of the data at that time.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to the search process.

Jim Lianides, Superintendent

Estimados padres,
