Summary of Business Planning Session

"The mind advances only when it has the patience to go in circles, in other words, to deepen."  – Emil Cioran

It’s interesting to watch people learn, although everyone does it differently, but an interesting pattern emerges over time that is consistent. Learners, by their nature, understand much of what they will learn will be reinforcement - it’s a by product of the activity. Just like a surfer knows that everyone, pro and novice alike, has to paddle the first few few out from the beach. The pro might go further and hit higher waves, but everyone starts on the beach, every time.

I had the opportunity to attend the “Business Summit” in July presented by CanSPEP.  I would highly recommend that all Event Management Professionals participate in this hands-on, thought-provoking seminar that left me inspired; feeling much more influential with many actionable take-aways I can apply immediately!  In fact I immediately raised my hourly fee by $40 per hour and less than a month later signed two new clients.

CanSPEP members occupy a unique position in the meetings and events industry; a skilled worker who is also the business owner. Your responsibilities span event logistics to providing strategic vision. Your skills need to be broad and deep. It was, quite frankly, intimidating to create an education plan for such an accomplished and varied group.

Ultimately CanSPEP education serves the membership by providing programming which serves the needs of the highest number of members. To do this we asked you, the members, what your skill and knowledge needs are. The picture that emerged is a high empathy group which excels at handling stress and solving problems. You want skill development in Finance, HR and Sales and help with business and goal planning.
Our 2017 education plan will address the needs of the event entrepreneur with skills based, data driven content. Programming will be focused on contributing to your success, and designed for the highest return on your investment and resources will be available exclusively to members.  At the board level, I am working with my fellow VPs to create learning and development synergies and community sharing platforms so we can learn together and from each other

The CanSPEP Education committee is a dynamic, professional and dedicated group – Diane Mihalek, Barb McRae, Karen Fiorini, Helen VanDongen and Shannon McLellan – with the expert input and guidance of Ingrid Norrish as our Past President Council representative.

We kick start the 2017 plan in 2016 with a business plan workshop on December 7th and January 12th and 13th CanSPEP will host a two day business summit to start your 2017 year off strong. Watch your inbox for updates in the next few weeks.

As the year unfolds, we’ll come back to you as members to ask what is working and what isn’t. Our aim is be responsive to your needs and input with ongoing discussion. My CanSPEP email is Education@CanSPEP.ca – I look forward to hearing from you and learning with you in 2017.

Sincerely,
Natalie Lowe, CMM
VP, Education
