Cold Yanks Hungry for Aussie Mangoes
It’s almost Christmas and that means winter for our neighbours in the North. As Australian Mangoes continue to roll on to the shelves of high end retailers here in the USA, American consumers are showing a real appetite for the taste of Aussie Summer.
Across the weekend targeted stores in Los Angeles featured large luscious displays of R2E2’s from the Manbulloo orchard in Horseshoe Lagoon. These mangoes looked fresh and vibrant and were packed with that juicy, sweet mango flavour that’s unique to Australia.
I was delighted to see mangoes that were retailing for $7 each being purchased in multiples and even by the tray, with one man purchasing three trays after trying Australia’s favourite fruit for the first time!
I couldn’t resist and purchased several trays myself as “thank you” gifts for people who have been very generous with their hospitality. Without exception, everywhere I’ve taken them, our American friends have fallen in love with the flavour of Australian Mangoes, “amazing”, “delicious”, “stunning”, “awesome”, “incredible”, “sensational”, and so it goes... and then there was Kylie, the vibrant, singing & dancing 10 year old who promptly announced on arrival, “I so don’t eat mangoes!”. Within minutes of watching everyone joyously devouring the glistening orange hedgehogs, she dived in, gave it her best shot, and was totally hooked, spending the rest of the night sucking mango seeds over the kitchen sink! Sound familiar?
