Lumley Primary schoolgirls have made the national news this week, after sending a complaint letter to the FA for publishing 'sexist' guidelines which were aimed at encouraging girls to get into football. We asked Deputy Head Carol Hughes how this all came about and she kindly wrote about it in detail for our final 'Talking Heads' of the term: "The story spread incredibly quickly – by the afternoon we had reports from a relative in America that the story was on the international BBC news for example – and snowballed into a huge wash of reports."

The DfE has published new statistical data of apprenticeships by geography, age and level. In the last academic year 38,210 people started apprenticeships in the North East. This is an increase of 2,990 or 8.49% on 2014/15 and an increase of 24,750 on 2005/06 – almost a threefold increase. The number of apprenticeships in each of the 12 local authorities in the North East has more than doubled in the past 10 years. Click below for a breakdown of the statistics.
