News from the British Cryogenic Cluster:
Happy Christmas !
December 2016
Dear <<First Name>>,
Congratulations to Ronald and Maurice (Demaco) Dekker, who just cycled to India !
And Congratulations to Dr Mark Raine, University of Durham, receiving the inaugural Harry Jones Prize from BCC Chairman Dr Beth Evans, for research in applied experimental science involving Cryogenics, in memory of former, Chairman Professor Harry Jones.
Here’s the BCC Executive at the recent AGM at Culham.

Looking for that final Christmas present ? Why not a Cryogenic Clock ? Have a Great Christmas !!
Stratox claim to be first to develop and commercialise zero ozone depleting mixtures, and promote Cascade refrigerants for Polycold, Telemark and other cryo pumps.
Iceland (the country) is taking trademark action against Iceland (the supermarket). The FT says “relations between the nation and the grocer show little sign of thawing …”
Californian Ice Energy propose an ice-based energy storage unit for homes generating solar energy and using air conditioning.
A report by ETCC estimates California has 58,000 ULT freezers, consuming 400 million kWh/year. It concludes that new energy-efficient freezers consume 25-70% less than standard-efficiency peers. Raising temperature from -80 to -70 C reduces consumption by 37% without impact on performance.
Measuring gravity can be made more accurate by dropping ultra-cold atoms in an interferometer using Bose-Einstein Condensates.
Oxford Instruments launched its new SampleProtect measurement system with OptistatDry Cryofree® bottom loading cryostat, protecting against risk of Electrostatic Discharge damage.
Praxair and Linde have resumed talks previously broken off, on a merger of equals (or takeover by Praxair, depending who you believe.) Sums by the FT (Linde has twice Praxair’s employees but 20% less profit) suggest the need for job cuts at Linde in times of stagnant growth in industrial gas.
gasworld published this interview with Dohmeyer, who make cryogenic equipment in Belgium.
CERN has released a market survey for supply of 13 Vacuum Vessels for 11T Superconducting Dipole Magnets and Connection Cryostats – documentation here – with a deadline of January 5 to return information. Keep Allanah at STFC in the loop (with more here on Doing Business with CERN.)
There’s consternation in Australia at deductibles being applied on LNG projects to reduce tax payable to the State.
In a crowded September, after MT-25 (August 27-September 1), Cluster Day at Daresbury on September 20 will overlap with EUCAS in Geneva (September 17-21.)
