News from the British Cryogenic Cluster:
Happy Christmas !
December 2016

Dear <<First Name>>,

Cycle to India
Congratulations to Ronald and Maurice (Demaco) Dekker, who just cycled to India !

Harry Jones PrizeAnd Congratulations to Dr Mark Raine, University of Durham, receiving the inaugural Harry Jones Prize from BCC Chairman Dr Beth Evans, for research in applied experimental science involving Cryogenics, in memory of former, Chairman Professor Harry Jones.

Here’s the BCC Executive at the recent AGM at Culham.

Looking for that final Christmas present ?  Why not a Cryogenic Clock ?  Have a Great Christmas !!

Happy Reading from Team BCryo

Cluster Member NewsGate Valve

Blackhall Engineering is cooking up the biggest gate valve ever, for Texas !

World’s End for Quantum Cryogenics ?  It’s their new address near Newbury !

HIghview Power StorageHighview Power Storage have a new logo – and this Liquid Air Energy Storage animation on YouTube.

Stratox claim to be first to develop and commercialise zero ozone depleting mixtures, and promote Cascade refrigerants for Polycold, Telemark and other cryo pumps.

CSA ran this piece on cooling a Malaysian data centre, involving Cluster Member Dearman Engine.

The Cold Chain

Iceland vs IcelandIceland (the country) is taking trademark action against Iceland (the supermarket).  The FT says “relations between the nation and the grocer show little sign of thawing …”

Californian Ice Energy propose an ice-based energy storage unit for homes generating solar energy and using air conditioning.

Hydrogen, Helium & Xenon

Where did all the xenon go ?

Cluster Member Richard Clarke pointed us to this ’well considered paper by IFP in Paris,’ discussing better ways of phasing out the US BLM.

Here’s a CSA Story on hydrogen storage in a Graphene Hybrid.

gasworld reports on equipment for a project to recover helium from a primarily nitrogen feedstock.

LOT Quantum Design posted this piece on Helium Recovery in NMR Labs such as Aarhus (and this on Characterising Superconductors plus this on Cryogenic Ferromagnetic Resonance Spectrometers.)

News in LNG & LEG

While LNG projects in Australia have gone wildly over time and budget, Exxon’s management brought their Papua New Guinea project in ahead of schedule.  EY reports that average power and utility megaprojects run 35% over budget and 2 years overdue.  The Government of Queensland, now a major producer of LNG, published this Discussion Paper on Gas Supply and Demand.

LNG World News posted an interview with Nakilat, the world’s largest LNG shipping company.

Samsung just delivered the world’s biggest Liquid Ethane Carrier to ship American ethane to India.

Flogas brings LNG to Rosyth, near Edinburgh.

India just launched its first LNG Bus from Tata, with a Chart fuel tank, to help reduce carbon emissions.

The Nikkei Asian Review reports an LNG terminal construction boom – with Indonesia a future importer … !

News in Science & Healthcare

A report by ETCC estimates California has 58,000 ULT freezers, consuming 400 million kWh/year.  It concludes that new energy-efficient freezers consume 25-70% less than standard-efficiency peers. Raising temperature from -80 to -70 C reduces consumption by 37% without impact on performance.

Measuring gravity can be made more accurate by dropping ultra-cold atoms in an interferometer using Bose-Einstein Condensates.

Pablo Esquinazi claims to have identified room temperature superconductivity in graphene.  Scroll down this piece from physicsworld and you’ll find a story on making better graphene with liquid nitrogen.

CSA carries a piece on ultra-cold electrons forming a quantum fluid state and a
cooling technique to improve antiproton mass measurement.

Cryo Logistics play a part in ITER.  And here come three 137 tonne cold boxes for the liquid helium plant.  Helium Leak Testing is required on the 8500m3 ITER vacuum chamber (>100m of weld on the base alone). ITER is also getting two helium quench tanks, seen again here, arriving at Cadarache in the rain.  And here, a dummy pancake poloidal field coil  takes shape.

Oxford Instruments launched its new SampleProtect measurement system with OptistatDry Cryofree® bottom loading cryostat, protecting against risk of Electrostatic Discharge damage.

gasworld magazine did this extensive piece on life science equipment.

Cryo Biz

Praxair and Linde have resumed talks previously broken off, on a merger of equals (or takeover by Praxair, depending who you believe.)  Sums by the FT (Linde has twice Praxair’s employees but 20% less profit) suggest the need for job cuts at Linde in times of stagnant growth in industrial gas.

gasworld published this interview with Dohmeyer, who make cryogenic equipment in Belgium.

CERN has released a market survey for supply of 13 Vacuum Vessels for 11T Superconducting Dipole Magnets and Connection Cryostats – documentation here – with a deadline of January 5 to return information.  Keep Allanah at STFC in the loop (with more here on Doing Business with CERN.)

There’s consternation in Australia at deductibles being applied on LNG projects to reduce tax payable to the State.

Conrad Industries report a $12.5m loss on building an LNG Barge.  More on LNG World News.

Events & Education

MT25 EventIn a crowded September, after MT-25 (August 27-September 1), Cluster Day at Daresbury on September 20 will overlap with EUCAS in Geneva (September 17-21.)

There’s a book in the works, on Low and High-Tc Superconducting Sensors and Detectors.
