Final week to tell us what you want from our LPC
We have had a great response to our survey asking what you would like from us.
We're keeping the survey open for one more week to ensure you all get the opportunity to respond.
Let us know what you would like us to focus on by completing this quick survey on your top priorities, service needs, and how we can make it as easy as possible for you to keep up to date with key information and training.
Improved medicines optimisation dashboard launched

Since its launch in 2014, NHS England's Medicines Optimisation Dashboard has been a useful tool to help inform local discussions about how to improve patient outcomes and get better value from medicines spend.
It includes a range of information which may be of interest to LPCs, from NMS and MUR provision, repeat dispensing usage, through to asthma emergency hospital admissions.
The dashboard has recently been modified and it will be updated with new data on a more regular basis.

NPA calls for simpler leadership structure in pharmacy, to meet challenges ahead
The NPA has given notice that it will not continue to fund Pharmacy Voice beyond the end of 2017, the end of the current three-year agreement between the founding associations.
NPA Chairman, Ian Strachan, said: “Recognising the challenges ahead for the whole sector, and especially independents, the NPA Board has asked me to take steps to increase the capability of community pharmacy leadership in England."

Healthy Living Pharmacy Survey
If you have not yet done so, please could you complete this short survey regarding HLP? (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GMHLPinfo)

This survey is to be completed by all pharmacies across Greater Manchester. (CCA pharmacies will collate centrally.)

  • Pharmacies that currently or have previously taken part in this service are asked to complete the full form.
  • Pharmacies who have not yet provided the service should complete it to express interest in providing the service in future. This will help determine the amount of training required.

The results of this survey will greatly influence the formation of a new GM-wide Healthy Living Pharmacy service which is due to be re-launched early in the New Year.

Thank you to the pharmacies that have completed this survey so far.

Please note that training is due to commence in January so be sure to let us know if you need training.

Fake Meds Advent Calendar

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) runs a Fake Meds Advent Calendar campaign as a part of its long-term commitment to reduce the harm to the UK public caused by purchasing fake, unlicensed or counterfeit medical products online.
During this festive period, MHRA have launched an advent calendar that will reveal daily warnings and facts on danger of purchasing medicines from unsafe sources.
These education snippets are also shared on twitter; the full advent calendar is available here

Latest drug stock and supply issues/updates

The GMLPC has set up a reporting tool for community pharmacists to log supply issues. You can access this tool here or by copying this link into your browser:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/pharmacystockissues

This is a new tool launched in November 2016 by GMLPC building on the tool utilised by Manchester and Salford and Trafford LPC.

If you have any feedback, please email the GMLPC office on enquiries@gmlpc.org.uk.

The tool can be adapted and changed if you think we can improve it, so we welcome your thoughts - we just don’t want to make it too long!

Going forward the LPC will update our newsletter with prevalent stock issues and we will also report all supply issues direct to the relevant medicines management teams.

Dementia Friends
- A quality payment requirement

"On the day of the review, 80% of all pharmacy staff working in patient-facing roles are trained Dementia Friends"

The Dementia Friends initiative is about giving people an understanding of dementia and the small things that could make a difference to people living with dementia in their community. It has been developed by the Alzheimer’s Society, is supported by Public Health England (PHE) and forms part of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia.

There are two routes by which people can become a Dementia Friend:

Contractors seeking to achieve this criterion should aim to ensure that all staff who work in roles where they deal with patients (e.g. pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dispensary staff, counter assistants and delivery drivers) become Dementia Friends. In this way, you can ensure all staff have an understanding of dementia and what can be done to support people living with the condition.

The QP requirement is that at least 80% of pharmacy staff in patient facing roles are Dementia Friends on the day of the review; this includes locums, so contractors should encourage temporary staff, such as locum pharmacists, to become Dementia Friends.

A record sheet is available on the PSNC website which will allow contractors to keep a record of their staff members and temporary staff, such as locums, that have become Dementia Friends. Contractors should keep a copy of any certificates/letters that staff receive once they become a Dementia Friend as evidence of compliance with this QP criterion.

Over 50% of pharmacies using SCR

The latest statistics from NHS Digital show that more than half of community pharmacies in England (almost 6,000) have now accessed the Summary Care Record (SCR). Greater Manchester is already exceeding 50%, and with additional training being planned for January we expect access to soon be higher.

This is a significant milestone in the roll-out of SCR to the community pharmacy sector and its usage could help pave the way for read/write access.

Accessing SCR has also been included as one of the criteria in the new Quality Payments scheme: increased usage could be worth up to £640 in 2017/18. PSNC will shortly release a calculator to assist contractors in determining their usage of SCR.

Pharmacy contractors are also entitled to claim a £200 SCR allowance, but they only have until 31st March 2017 to start accessing SCR in order to trigger the payment.

Nazam Iqbal, a pharmacist working at Manor Pharmacy (Blundell’s Pharmacy Ltd) in Leigh, said:

The process of setting up the SCR viewer was simple and easy. I can use it when delivering services such as the flu jab, or when an issue arises with the emergency supply of medication. It is an invaluable tool to help pharmacists make a better clinical judgement, with all the relevant information available to them.”

Frequently asked questions

Q. I have yet to attend an NHS Digital approved face-to-face implementation briefing; when will there next be events in my area?

A. If you are among the 10% of contractors yet to attend a face-to-face event, a limited number of events are expected to be organised in 2017 and an announcement on these is expected shortly. Please refer to psnc.org.uk/SCRtraining for more information, and keep an eye on your email as GMLPC will be sending out information regarding local training opportunities.

Q. I have attended an SCR implementation event but am not yet using SCR; how do I get started?

A. If you have already attended a face-to-face event but are not yet using SCR then PSNC has created an implementation checklist to help explain the steps in the go-live process.

Q. Is there a way to practise using SCR?

A. PSNC recommends using test patient NHS numbers (e.g. 999 040 2132) to help you become more familiar with the process. You can practise SCR access using this test number at: https://portal.national.ncrs.nhs.uk/portal/dt.

Q. Have you got any pointers on how to boost my pharmacy’s SCR usage?

A.The PSNC SCR webinar outlines some handy hints.

PhD opportunity: Mapping the ‘new’ community pharmacy commissioning landscape in England

This project aims to map the commissioning landscape in community pharmacy in England, since the reorganisation of the NHS from 1 April 2013. It will profile which services are being commissioned, which organisations are involved and how commissioning is occurring.
