Cleveland State University Partnership

Audit program students from left to right: Taylor Greason, Mohammed Aleissa, Hitarthsinh Chudasama, Umeshbhai Balar, Lokesh Naga Sai Tadavarthi, Sasi Kesava Kumar Bolisetty

Cleveland 2030 District is very proud to count Cleveland State University as one of our member properties. As a matter of fact, they were an early adopter of the District, joining in 2014.

Recently, we have taken our partnership to a new level. CSU, in collaboration with the University of Dayton received a grant from the Ohio Lean Building Program to give students hands on training to perform industry standard ASHRAE level 2 energy audits.

Knowing we have progressive property owners, CSU contacted us to see if we had any buildings willing to participate in this program. They only had the resources to provide two audits. We’re happy to say a number of our properties volunteered and on a first come first served basis, Church of the Covenant and the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) were selected to participate in the program.

The program was led by Constantin Draganoiu, Director of Utilities and Energy for CSU, Dr. Mounir Ibrahim, Professor and Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department at CSU and Dr. Robert Gilbert, Professor of Energy Management Technology, and the Director of the Center for Energy Education at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Assistant Director of the Industrial Assessment Center at the University of Dayton.

Guided by these three experts, the students scheduled visits to walk the buildings and gather the information they needed to develop their recommendations for energy savings. After a thorough site visit, the students were prepared to create a very professional audit report, giving various options to save energy, costs to implement the suggested upgrades and return on investment calculations.

It is still too early in the process to know if our buildings are able to implement any of the recommendations, but if they do, we’ll circle back and compare actual savings to the students’ calculations.

Dr. Ibrahim is hopeful that CSU will collaborate with the University of Dayton and become a hub for providing this exceptional opportunity to students. Cleveland 2030 District is looking forward to continuing this partnership with more audits – we have another 174 buildings to go!

Building Education Series

Building Education Series Session, November 10, 2016

In partnership with NEO USGBC, COSE, the Cleveland ASHRAE Chapter, the City of Cleveland, the Cleveland Chapter of AIA and their Building Enclosure Council, Cleveland 2030 District presented a series of six educational sessions this year.

In September we learned about HVAC systems and controls. Our speakers were ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Hoy Bohanon, Jr., P.E., President of Hoy Bohanon Engineering, PLLC and Nate Smick, Energy Engineer with Gardiner Trane. They gave us an understanding of how HVAC controls are a vital part of a well functioning, energy efficient building and how existing buildings can improve performance without a system replacement or large capital investments.

Thanks to our sponsor for this event, AM Higley.

In November the session was about Operations, Maintenance and Staff and Tenant Engagement. Speakers included Air Force One’s, Debra Dixon, Director of Development and Ed Rebish, Manager of the Automation Group as well as Marc Divis, President of Cleveland Thermal. They gave real examples of how organizations are engaging their staff and employees in conserving energy and making substantial progress toward their sustainability goals. We also learned about the importance of properly maintaining systems for peak performance, energy savings and extending the useful life of mechanical systems.

Thanks to Air Force One for sponsoring this event.

All six organizations will collaborate again in 2017 to bring six more sessions. Be sure to save the dates! These events sold out in 2016 so be sure to register early.

Tour Series

Playhouse Square Tour, August 16, 2016

Tour season has ended for 2016. We typically do these beginning in the Spring through Fall. This year we had some fantastic tours. Since our last newsletter, we toured Cleveland Playhouse Square, learning not only about their efficiency projects but a bit of the history of Playhouse Square as well. We toured Akron Children’s Hospital, Garrett A. Morgan Water Treatment Plant, following the flow of water through the plant and our last tour at Cleveland School of the Arts. I know the students there recognize what an exceptional facility they have.

Garrett A. Morgan Water Treatment Plant Tour, September 13, 2016

Thank you to all our hosts. Our members truly appreciate you opening your facility and sharing your best practices with us. Our tours are free and usually followed by a networking event afterwards. We’re happy to partner with NEO USGBC on these events. The Tour Series has been very popular, drawing 40 or more participants for each tour. We’ll start the tours again in the Spring. We already have a great line up planned!
Summit Highlights

2030 Districts Network Summit, September 2016

The 2016 annual 2030 Districts Summit, held September 20-23 in Toronto, was a great success. The Summit is an essential opportunity for the 15 established and several emerging 2030 Districts across North America to come together face-to-face and share best practices and plan for the future of the 2030 Districts Network.

Isabella McKnight, Program Manager, Cleveland 2030 District Presenting at September 2016 Summit

At the Summit, Cleveland 2030 District led several sessions, most notably on our performance reports and events that were presented with collaborating organizations. Other sessions included updates from all the Districts on their progress, stormwater management, marketing, resiliency, transportation, and water baselining. Cleveland 2030 District looks forward to implementing lessons learned from the Summit.

District Executive Directors at the September 2016 Summit

At this event, the transference of governance of the 2030 Districts from Architecture 2030 to the newly launched 2030 Districts Network was reviewed. We are very grateful to Architecture 2030 for pioneering the 2030 movement and supporting Cleveland as the second established District. The 2030 Districts Network is a non-profit organization that will assist new 2030 Districts to become established and develop Network-wide opportunities and partnerships.

A great thanks to Toronto 2030 District for hosting the 2030 Districts Summit!

Transportation Survey

Cleveland 2030 District has been working hard on developing a transportation metric so that we can begin measuring reductions in CO2 emissions from commuter transportation, both district-wide and at the building level. Earlier this year, we set our transportation baseline, a District-specific value with help from RTA and the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency's (NOACA) 2012 Northeast Ohio Regional Travel Survey. Last month, the District distributed our Transportation Survey to property adopters to begin the process of measuring reductions in commuter emissions.

The District is very excited to begin benchmarking CO2 emissions from commuter transportation in time for the end of Sustainable Cleveland 2019’s Year of Sustainable Transportation. To learn more about simple steps you can take in your building to reduce commuter emissions, download the Ten 2030 Tips brochure.
Green Building Challenge

It is not too late to sign up for the 2016 Green Building Challenge. We collaborate with Northeast Ohio United States Green Building Council (USGBC) on a friendly challenge that measures sustainable improvements in EUI (Energy Use Intensity) year over year.

2030 Districts Update

As of October, there are 15 established 2030 Districts and six emerging Districts. The newest established Districts are Ithaca, Austin and Portland, ME. The total building area in the Network currently exceeds 296 million square feet.

Emerging Districts include: Ann Arbor, Burlington, Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia and Tucson. We look forward to following the progress of these emerging Districts.

Click here for more information about the 2030 District Network.

Thank you!

We would like to take this time to thank our member properties, partners, volunteers and funders for your support of the Cleveland 2030 District. We would not be successful without you. We wish you the very best for a happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
