Wow! Where do I begin? It has been an amazing 9 months for MAA. Since our inaugural meeting and celebration kick off in March, we have grown our membership to 199 members, representing 23,434 total units, 20 management companies, and 44 associates. Our Board of Directors has worked tirelessly on continued growth of the association by lining out the strategic plan for future years, prioritizing that plan, and monitoring our successes and failures.

We have achieved many successes in 2016 to include the transfer of the Hattiesburg area from the Greater Gulf Coast Association to MAA, launching our website in early 2016, and holding our first annual conference and trade show with 6 educational sessions and 31 booths. Additionally, the Government Affairs committee has successfully implemented task forces to watch for activity affecting our industry on local levels, hosted well-attended owner/ manager breakfasts to discuss issues, and has begun preparing for lobbying efforts and PAC campaigns for 2017.

2017 promises to be even bigger and better with our first CAM and NALP already on the books for first quarter, and Maintenance Mania slated for the fall to be held in conjunction with the Trade Show. We will also be rolling out criteria for our first annual awards banquet to be held at year end.

Thank you to our Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, Committee members, as well as all of you-our members, for making this such an awesome year! We could not have done it without your hard work and dedication to our industry. There has been one consistent theme among our leadership and that is to “work smart, not hard to ensure future growth and success”. There is strength in numbers and I encourage all of you to get involved and help make MAA be the recognized voice for the apartment industry.

Membership renewal invoices were mailed out earlier this week. Included in the mail out was a 2017 calendar of events, member update form and a MAA Member Decal to display at your business. Please return payment and the member update form by January 14, 2017.

Washington Is Calling! Will You Answer?

For the apartment industry to have a voice on Capitol Hill, it’s critically important that all NAA members actively participate in the 2017 NAA Capitol Conference and Lobby Day.
Industry members need to educate more than 50 new members of Congress, as well as the returning Senators and Representatives, on the important issues at stake and their impact on NAA members’ businesses. As always, our goal is to reach all 535 Congressional offices. It’s a lofty goal, but will be made easier with the launch of the new, complimentary Advocacy365 app, your personal assistant on Lobby Day (and the rest of the year).
World-renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will keynote the Capitol Conference with her take on leadership lessons from American presidents.
Being an advocate is easy! NAA conducts a webinar on the issues several weeks in advance and holds an issues briefing and advocacy orientation during the Capitol Conference to help the most novice advocate feel like an expert.
Whether you’re new to Lobby Day or a seasoned advocate, remember that your voice is critical to help the industry reach our policy goals. Congress needs and wants to hear from you!
Registration is now open and it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the JW Marriott’s group rate (cut-off date: Feb. 10).
The Spring Governance meeting will precede the Capitol Conference from March 5 through 7.
