Diversity Task Force: Inclusivity Tip #6

Consider simple things you can do next semester in your class to break down barriers. Don’t ask students of color to speak on behalf of their entire racial or ethnic group.

This tip is from UW-La Crosse which recently produced a video (by its students) regarding inclusive negligence on the UW-L campus. Some of you may have seen it. All UWSP departments have been asked to view and talk about this video over the next few months. Stay tuned for more tips from this video in upcoming CPS Monday Messages.

Marty's Message

Of the 650 graduates at commencement this past weekend 216 of them were from the College of Professional Studies. In addition to the large numbers of graduates, our college was well represented within the ceremony itself. Commencement speaker Barbara Hickman '60 is an alum of our School of Education, student speaker Amy Vida ‘16 (family and consumer sciences), and School of Business and Economics alum Jim Anderson ’89 and his wife Patti ’14 led the pinning ceremony. In addition, Leslie McClain (education) served as grand marshal and Beth Kinslow (athletics training) as faculty marshal.

Barbara Hickman delivered a simple, yet powerful message, encouraging our students to get involved and make a difference. Her message was heartfelt and right on the mark.

Amy Vida ‘16 has been active in the Student Government Association and this past year served as the vice president of the student body. Amy played an instrumental role bringing differential tuition to campus which led to the creation of college-based advising centers and improved student advising throughout campus. Amy’s talk was inspiring.

Jim and Patti Anderson are both graduates of UWSP. Jim–now president of Ellis Construction–earned his degree in business administration, serves on our Business Advisory Council and teaches our Project Management course in our School of Business and Economics.

Leslie McClain has had an outstanding faculty career. She was honored for excellence in teaching and gained acclaim for her writings on Wisdom-Centered Leadership. From 1994-2006 she served as associate dean and head of the School of Education. She is a strong advocate for education at all levels, which made her a perfect grand marshal.

Beth Kinslow, who recently completed her doctorate, is an outstanding teacher and has been instrumental in creating our new master’s degree in athletic training. She is a fitting choice to lead an outstanding group of faculty and staff.

Commencement is the most rewarding and exciting part of my job as dean. Seeing our students, faculty and alumni shine at commencement makes it even better.
