News update: Anglican Communion Environmental Network
by Rev Rachel Mash rmash@mweb.co.za

On behalf of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network we would like to wish you a joyous Christmas and a well earned break with your family and friends.

Although 2016 will be remembered as the year when  darkness was very strong, the advent period reminds us that light is stronger than darkness and it will not be overcome. The small army of those people filled with hate is much smaller than the great army of those filled with love and compassion - our task - to mobilise the big army! Here are a few stories of how Anglicans around the world are making a difference.

In the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu . “Good is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death. Victory is ours, through him who loves us".

Standing Rock

The prayers of the world were with the Sioux nation at Standing Rock as they stood to protect their water from the proposed oil pipe. Water is more precious than oil. The Episcopal Church took a strong stand and stood in solidarity with the protestors - and joined them in celebration as the Pipeline was halted - for now.

Historic encounter of the Portuguese speaking countries of Africa.

Mozambique and Angola are more than 2000 km apart and the youth has never connected up to now. After meeting up at the Young Green Anglicans Workshop in Lusaka before ACC, connections were made and a wonderful encounter was had. High on the agenda were actions plans on the environment.

COP22

The nations of the world again came together in Marrakesh and continued to build on the commitments made in Paris. Although the conference was somewhat overshadowed by the Trump win, significant progress was made by other countries. A highlight was the commitment made by the 47 most vulnerable nations to move to complete renewable energy.

A quote from a Hopi Elder

"Banish the word 'struggle' from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration. We are the ones we have been waiting for.”
