2016 brought renewed commitment to patients and people from the community having an active role in shaping the next generation of health professionals!

Over the past year, the momentum has been building with the publication of the 'Vancouver Statement' and the approval of a new Patient & Community Advisory Committee for UBC Health.

Thank you for being part of the work to bring patient and community voices into health professional education. We look forward to continuing the journey in 2017!

Wishing you a joyful holiday season!

New Patient & Community Advisory Committee for UBC Health

On December 1st, the UBC Health Council approved the terms of reference for the new UBC Health Patient & Community Advisory Committee.

The 12 person committee will act as a resource to UBC Health, providing patients' perspectives and advice to the UBC Health Council and its subcommittees.

Congratulations Health Mentors Cohort 5!

Thank you to the 200 students and 51 mentors who took part in cohort 5 of the Health Mentors program. Evaluations show the program continues to be highly rated by students and mentors. On a scale of 1 (worst) to 5 (best), students rated it 3.8 and mentors rated it 4.5.

Final grades and passport points will be issued to students in January. Mentors will be recognized at the annual Health Mentors meeting on January 30th.

The Health Mentors Program is an interprofessional initiative where students from different health disciplines learn together from a person living with chronic illness or disability.

Happy Holidays from PIE!

Patients in Education (PIE) wishes you peace and joy over the holiday season!

This has been a big year for us with a core group of about 20 who have been meeting monthly to create an organization to bring patient and community expertise into the education of health professionals.

We have been working hard to fill increasing requests for patients to get involved in committees and curriculum activities and writing proposals for funding and conference presentations.

With a generous donation from Christine Farrell, a 'Patient's Voice' conference committee member and long-time advocate for patient and public involvement in the UK, we will begin work on a new website for PIE in the New Year.

We look forward to growing the group in 2017! Stay tuned!
