This Friday our students will have the opportunity to learn about countries and cultures through the efforts of our parent community.  Our International Day will be kicked off with an assembly featuring a group from Santa Barbara, Brazil Capoeira.  Many thanks to our International Day Coordinator,  Idona Cabrinha, and our amazing parent presenters.  A special recognition to this year's presenters: Lauren Madonna, Tamara Thompson, Lyndsey MacLeod, Sarah Black, Megan Siems, Mandi Toole, Laila Fouzi, Anne Marie Drabinski, Debbie Gower, and Quin Zhang.

This Spring our 3rd through 6th grade students will be taking state tests on computers.  More information about our schedule will be available closer to these assessments, but our testing window will be this May.

The SBAC assessment measures critical thinking with questions that ask students to demonstrate their research, writing, and problem solving skills.  Assessments are not timed and students can take breaks.

Woosh! December is already half over and as usual we have a lot of cool activities in the works at BP before the holiday break. This Friday our school will take time out of their normal schedules to take part in International Day! Grades 3-6 will have the opportunity to “Visit” three different countries and our younger grades will be learning about one Country in class. All of the students will get to attend a special cultural assembly too! International Day is such a wonderful way for our school to learn about different cultures and customs. I huge thank you in advance to Idona Cabrinha, Magnolia Stork and all of the volunteers, teachers and staff who are spending so much time putting this together for our students. Please ask your children all about it on Fridayevening, hopefully you will learn something too.

Our super awesome school librarian, Kama Beaton, is working on creating a maker space in the library. What a great opportunity for our kids! She would love your help and support to make this great space a possibility for our children. She is also still looking for volunteer help with everyday library tasks.

Thank you so much to all of the room reps and parents helping put together fun winter parties for classes next week. And a BIG thank you to Sarah Johnson for putting together our school directory that went out last week!

Please Mark your calendars for our evening PTA meeting Wednesday January  11 at 6:00pm.This will be a potluck meeting and a great chance for all of those who are unable to attend the afternoon meeting to come. Have a merry winter break with your family and friends and I look forward to a very happy 2017.

Yours Truly,

Lauren Madonna

Message from our District’s Superintendent, Dr. Eric Prater

Political Shifts and Feeling Safe in our Schools

The recent presidential election has raised concerns about certain students and families feeling safe in our schools.  I have been told that a number of our families feel uneasy about attending public forums or school activities because of threats (or comments) made by our president-elect regarding deportation of certain groups during the recent election season.  Some of our younger students fear their parents will be taken away from them while they are attending school. These fears are real and I am deeply troubled by them.

I want everyone to know that San Luis Coastal Unified School District is a welcoming, safe and supportive place for all of our families and students – regardless of ethnic origin, religious affiliation, or immigration status.   SLCUSD reflects our community’s values of inclusion, dignity, and respect.  I emphatically stand up for our students’ rights to feel safe at our schools and in our neighborhoods.

All administrators, school counselors, and staff are ready and willing to support any student who has concerns following our recent election. We stand firm against any form of harassment and are committed to ensuring every student is accepted and embraced.
