There was a protest about the closing of the ASB on Tuesday - which you can read about in stuff

For those who enjoyed, or who meant to, the Street Food at the Community Centre last Friday, they have a Facebook page to keep you updated

Next meeting of the Point Chevalier Comunity Committee will be at 7.30pm, 20 February, Point Chevalier Community Centre, Huia Road

The Eden-Roskill Camera Club now meets at the Tennis Club, 3rd Monday each month except Jan and Dec. www.edenroskillcameraclub.com

If you're wondering what's happening at Walker Park, this from Margi Watson:
"The new field isn’t artificial fields or any of the new hybrid type surfaces (like at Nixon Park).
They are grass fields. But the fields get hammered by all the sport played on them and the weather. So they are putting some water irrigation and sand surface under them before they plant the new grass. There will be 2 new lights put in too – but the will be removed over summer for cricket/athletics etc. So while it looks like pretty major construction right now – everything will be back to normal once the grass grows ."

The Point Chevalier Beach Cafe (down the end near Coyle Park) will be opening soon so keep up to date with progress on their FB page

And Bruce at 58 Miller St is back on form:

Have a super last week of madness.

Viva La Chev! 1022 for life!

Cheers

Cam

Latest newsletter from the always interesting Point Chevalier Historical Society.

The Grey Warblers Seek New Members:
We are the Selwyn Village community choir for seniors. Share the joy and fellowship of singing in a group and make new friends. Previous experience or the ability to read music is not essential. All are welcome, especially men.  We sing in the Selwyn Christmas pantomime and perform several times a year with the Aotea Youth Symphony. Our varied repertoire includes old favourites, songs from the shows and spirituals. Rehearsals are in the music room on Wednesdays from 2.15 to 3.15 pm.  Our musical director and pianist, Catherine Carr, is a multiple award-winning professional musician, so she charges a fee. To cover this and other expenses, we contribute a weekly koha ($5 for individuals or a couple). In cases of financial constraints, members pay what they can afford.

How it works

If you are going to list an event I strongly recommend listing it in eventfinder as that has a very broad audience and I can link to it.

If you write to me with a comment, picture, info, etc, please assume that I might publish it.  So, if you DON'T want your correspondence to be printed or want it public but want to be remain anonymous, please say so.  I usually don't name your full name so will put something like "Thanks to Brett for ....", or "Sue writes to advise..." or similar.   If you send me something I usually don't reply, or very briefly if I do - please don't think I'm rude, I'm just busy.  I get about 50 emails a week so bear with me.

This email gets sent out most weeks usually on a Wednesday or Thursday as time permits, or Friday if I'm really busy - please get material to me by late afternoon Wednesday to get in.  It is a project to help people find out about what is already right under their nose.  I heavily rely on people telling me things so please mail me whatever you think is important at pointchevwebsite@gmail.com.  Please send things I can cut and paste to save me having to edit.  If sending pictures,  jpegs only please, no pdfs.

When I started this I wanted it to be apolitical and non-commercial, as I felt that was the only way to gain universal trust and respect.  It's still kind of non-commercial for while I do happily take money off people for the few ads I run, they are ludicrously cheap, and my payment works out to be probably about half the hourly minimum wage.  With regard to poltical issues, I try to sit in the middle and I want to be the source of information, not the lobbyist for one side, and will gladly include relevant pieces from people who have a mandate or direct interest (note: this does not mean any individual with an opinion).

Individuals - Use the free classifieds for things you want to publicise - garage sales, lost and found, etc
Clubs, Societies,  not for profit groups - we exist to give you free publicity.  Please forward all info about events, fundraisers, membership drives, etc and I'll add it to the both the website and this newsletter as appropriate.
Businesses/money making activities - we want to help local people find local business.  A listing on the business pages of www.pointchev.com is free, whereas we charge for ads on this email as described here:

Business Advertising

I figure that if I help you make money from your activity by publicising it then I charge a small fee and the proceeds buy me the wine that keeps me motivated to do this.

Businesses have three options:
1.   News section - FREE
If something is newsworthy like new exhibition at Icoco, a free wine tasting at Nomas, new zumba class at the bowling club, the Goodwin Realty community event at MOTAT then I'll put it in the news section, for nothing.    Of course, I reserve the right to decide what is and isn't newsworthy.

2.   Point Chev Good Guys section - advertising
This has good exposure and has worked well for some advertisers, but it must also be said not all (!).  I can track hyperlinks to websites (not emails sorry) so can measure how much interest was garnered if requested .

I get a lot of people trying to push the boundaries on the rules and am quite sick of it - so if you think you are being a bit cheeky, you probably are, and please don't.

I don't want too many big ads so have the following per issue rates to help keep them short and concise:
$10 for ads up to 15 words
$20 for ads up to 30 words
$30 for ads up to 40 words
Logos and pictures are $5 per image, unless the whole ad is a picture in which case, $20.  If sending pictures,  jpegs only please, no pdfs, plus keep them small, preferably more wide than long - I don't want ads dominating the page.
I suggest you try it once and see how it goes - if it works keep going, if not, feel free to keep giving me something for nothing regardless, teehee.

3.   Point Chev Deals - $20
If local businesses are prepared to offer a deal for Point Chev people then I'm happy to run it for $20 for two weeks.  So if you did something like "15% of everything till the end of September if you mention www.pointchev.com" that could go in here.
Forty words max and an image
