Hi! We need your help.

We want to better understand who uses STEM Teaching Tools and what we can do to improve.

Please take our one-minute survey.
Creating 3D Formative Assessments
In the new vision for science education, students learn in "three dimensions," combining disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. As teachers shift their instruction to this new vision, they need to develop developing new, 3D formative assessments.

To help educators in this work, we've created two 60-70 minute PD sessions:
These open educational resources can be freely shared, modified, and used in professional development. We also invite you to use them on your own or in a smaller professional learning community. They were developed as part of a new collaboration called the Advancing Coherent and Equitable Systems of Science Education (ACESSE, or "access") project —a partnership of the Council of State Science Supervisors, Colorado University Boulder, and the University of Washington.

Science Education Webinars
Our team members are participating in a series of webinars about current issues in science education on MSPNet.org. Come join the conversation!

The first, presented last week, explored how districts and schools can implement the new vision for science education. Presented by Philip Bell and Kerri Wingert, the webinar shared tools to develop three-dimensional assessments and highlighted strategies to keep equity central, focus PD over several years, and promote learner-centered discourse (especially for ELL students). Join us for three more webinars in this series! Get more info on upcoming webinars.
What are STEM Teaching Tools?
STEM Teaching Tool 3

STEM Teaching Tools are short briefs designed to bring together ideas and resources to address common challenges as educators adopt the new vision for science education in the NRC Framework and resulting Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These tools are helping thousands of educators across the country align their teaching with best practices from both research and teaching.

STEM Teaching tools are:

  • co-written by researchers and educators.
  • easily downloadable as PDFs.
  • updated regularly at stemteachingtools.org, with new briefs created in response to educator needs.
