Take a few deep breaths as you enter this time.
Feel the quietness of the Spirit deepening in you.

As you take a look over the year that has passed, you may feel a mixed bag of emotions.  So much has happened globally.  So many have been affected by what feels out of their control.  And for you?  There may have been challenges and victories, things to persevere through that required tenacity and patience.  Let us offer into the hands of the Lord the journey 2016 has been.  Jesus walks with us through the memories and events as we take a look back.  His loving presence carries us, though we may not be aware of it all the time. He is Immanuel, God with us.

There may be some areas that feel in some ways unfinished.  Perhaps there are areas that feel as though they hang in the balance, and you desire closure. Perhaps some seasons have come to an end.  There may be areas that you rejoice over.  Blessings that outweigh the trials.  Shared happiness, laughter, open doors and new seasons that are opening up.  Perhaps you are at the start of something altogether new.  Perhaps you are at a cross-roads.

Take some time to wait quietly on the Holy Spirit and together observe what comes.  Ask the Lord to reveal to you anything He desires to bring to your attention.  Even though we may not be aware of everything going on internally, the Spirit is faithful and will gently bring revelation on areas that need His touch.  There is no striving in this kind of waiting.  At the right time, insight will come like waves come to the shore.  "But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings." Malachi 4:2

Lord, what do you desire to bring to my attention? I am here Lord, I am listening.

Another year is coming to an end.
I can feel her tug at my calendar;
I can sense her insistent movement.
I can hear her call to cross over.

Outside my window the trees are empty
and the air has the ripeness of snowfall.
I cast an inward glance to the past
and feel a deep desire to catch its glow.

Something in me wants to hold on,
to gather all the good things close to me.
A part of me that yearns for security
keeps encouraging me to grasp it all.

Then a tiny thimble-full of light
moves its way through my insecurity;
it weaves a thread of courage,
sending sparks into the dark.
Up and up it rises through my spirit
until it meets my controlling grip.

The firefly flickers of God's grace
are enough to embrace the unknown.
A surge of powerful surrender
takes over all my looking back,
and ever so gently and hopefully
I risk the road of another new year.

As you listen to Messiah in the Field from Catching the Light audio devotional, turn your thoughts towards the year ahead.  Jesus is calling us to a first love revelation.  His first love gives us courage for what is ahead of us that we cannot see.  The unknown is fully held by Jesus.  We can rest in this trust.  As we keep the eyes of our hearts fixed on Jesus, He will give us the perspective we seek.  Spend some time waiting on the Holy Spirit as you listen for wisdom for the New Year 2017.  The One who has gone ahead of us is willing and we are willing to hear in the millions of ways He speaks.  "What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open." Revelation 3:7

Holy Spirit, I wait on you for insight. My heart is attentive to your love.  Help me to recognise your wisdom. What do you desire to share with me as I look towards 2017?

Looking over the past with you Lord and choosing to embrace the future helps me to live fully in the present moment.  I see you here with me through thick and thin, walking into the new year.  I commit 2017 to you. You are teaching me to trust even when trust is difficult. Help me to rest, because you have already gone ahead of me. I am thankful for all you have done and for all you will do!  You are renewing me in first love.

Amen
