Board of Directors approves $970.3-million 2017 budget

Toronto Community Housing’s Board of Directors approved a $970.3-million budget for 2017 at the December 8 board meeting. This includes $572.6-million for operating expenses and a $397.7-million capital budget, of which $250 million will be used for building capital repairs. 

Toronto Community Housing will also face a $35.2-million shortfall in the operating budget for 2017. To address that issue, the Board passed a motion to apply $19 million from a projected 2016 cash surplus and put any remaining surplus into reserves to help fund future capital repair projects. Most of the 2016 surplus was a one-time gain from utility credits plus the proceeds from the sales of standalone homes and lands.

As Toronto Community Housing enters its fifth year of the 10-year capital repair program, the 2017 budget will allow us to continue moving forward with our program to improve living conditions for tenants, build and repair units, and improve service delivery.

Regent Park community celebrates 10-year anniversary

2016 marked an important milestone for Regent Park. It has been 10 years since the demolition of the first buildings began in Regent Park as part of the revitalization. The Regent Park community celebrated together with staff from Toronto Community Housing, The Daniels Corporation and Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell at multiple events, which included a gala and workshops on December 9 and 10. The community had the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the achievements and lessons learned throughout revitalization, provide feedback, and help to set new goals for the second half of the project.

Reflecting on Toronto Community Housing’s accomplishments in 2016

Looking back on 2016, Toronto Community Housing has made significant achievements in improving living conditions for tenants, providing stronger services and delivery, and continuing to strengthen relationships with partners. We have:

• Completed over 37,000 capital repairs projects since 2013 as part of the 10-year capital repairs project plan.
• Launched a new, more accessible and responsive torontohousing.ca website
• Worked closely with a tenant committee to draft Toronto Community Housing’s first-ever Tenant Charter
• Hired more than 300 youth through our Rookie League, KickStart and YouthWorx programs
• Provided, with our partners, more than 60 scholarships and bursaries to tenants
• Opened the Regent Park Athletic Grounds with MLSE Foundation, the City of Toronto, and The Daniels Corporation, and broke ground on the MLSE LaunchPad, a sport-for-development centre in our 261 Jarvis St. building
• Launched the Home Run Scholars homework club with Jays Care Foundation

2016 also marked the start of a two-year term for seven citizen members on the Board of Directors and new members joined the Executive Leadership team including, Wayne Tuck, Mark Johnson, Angela Cooke and Mark McDonald.
