Eurobodalla Landcare Network Newsletter
Summer 2016
Welcome to the second electronic edition of the Eurobodalla Landcare Network Newsletter. We've had some great feedback from volunteers and have had many new subscribers. Landcare in the Eurobodalla just keeps growing!

Landcare Christmas Bus Tour 2017

We had over 40 volunteers attend the Christmas bus tour held last month representing over half of the Shires Landcare groups. It was a great opportunity for volunteers to catch up with each other and to learn what other groups have been up to with visits to Barlings Beach for the unveiling of the Mogo LALC signs, Tomaga River revegetation and sandbagging sites and Broulee Headland weed control and revegetation sites. Then, back to the Moruya SAGE gardens for an absolutely delicious meal made from all locally grown produce...yum!! Thanks to the Mogo LALC (above) who were willing to share their stories with us and to all of the volunteers across the Shire who have helped to keep Landcare growing.

Marine Debris working group update

We have worked with a huge array of volunteers and organisations including Landcare, local schools, the Green Army, Oyster growers, Region X kayaks, National Parks and a host of individuals cleaning up their ‘patch’. The Eurobodalla marine debris working group has continued to grow and bring in new members during 2016.

In the post code area 2536, members picked up 263 kilos across 15 sites.

In the post code area 2537, members picked up 240 kilos across 22 sites

If you want to know how to get involved, go to http://www.esc.nsw.gov.au/living-in/living-sustainably/get-involved/marine-debris-working-group and check out the ‘how to’ video on how to record marine debris onto the national database. http://www.tangaroablue.org/database.html

Art on the Path turns 10!

This well supported local event celebrated its 10th birthday last weekend - Art on the Path is held 4 times a year on the Broulee bike path showcasing local artworks, homemade produce and local environmental initiatives.Visitors to this event are able purchase handmade creations by local artists who recycle discarded materials into new treasures. Rusting metal, wood, glass, tiles and fabric all make their way to Broulee’s Art on the Path.  These potential land fill items are transformed into an array of artworks by talented locals with a passion for the natural environment. Worth celebrating - Happy Birthday!!

The next Art on the Path is on January 8th, 2017, opposite Broulee Post Office from 8am to midday.

Gilly, Heather & Alison at our landcare site at Little Lake, Narooma

From Down South at Narooma Little Landcare

We are a small, but dedicated group at Narooma and are very proud of our site near Narooma Surf beach. We’ve noticed much less litter now that we have established a native reserve along the lake and fore-shore and now have a lovely sign on Troll Bridge which is constantly educating the public about what we do in Landcare. We also recently welcomed a new member who has a holiday home in Narooma. Alison is horticulturalist as well, so she loves plants, which is good for us!

We are very proud too that our Landcare works and litter reduction partnership with Narooma SLSC and were one of the many community partnerships that saw Narooma winning Keep Australia Beautifuls Clean Beaches Award for Environmental Education for 2016.

Our group does not have set working days, but generally work once a month on a Thursday or Friday.  If you want to know what we are up to you can also visit our Facebook Page

Rare Banksia in good hands

We have been fortunate in the Eurobodalla to have had Dr David Bain assist over the years with various educational events and Landcare activities. David is pictured above leading volunteers through Bengello Forest (Broulee)  in February of this year discussing the important flora, fauna and ecology of this beautiful Bangalay Sand Forest EEC.
David also happens to be the son of dedicated Broulee Mossy Point Dunecare group coordinator, Lynn Bain, which is perhaps why his hand continually keeps being raised to assist us here in the Eurobodalla on his visits home! We appreciate him sharing his knowledge and passion and have included a link below for you to check out the exciting new project that David is working on as part of his position with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

Group hugs

Landcare in the Eurobodalla is going from strength to strength with groups not only getting together to solve environmental issues in their patch and banding together to work collectively, they are also finding the time to socialise 'after hours'. Many groups celebrated Christmas in style with group parties being held to celebrate the years achievements - pictured above are the Tomakin Coastcare group doing just that! We have had 2 new groups form in the last 2 months, at Ringlands in Narooma and McKenzies Beach, Malua Bay. We hope that all groups find the time to celebrate their achievements and give themselves a well deserved pat on the back :-) Wishing Landcare volunteers and their families a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year x x

Ever wanted to be sixteen again?

Council’s Environment Team got a taste of what it would be like to go back in time when they were recently host to 3 very clever and passionate high school students from both St Peters Anglican College and Carroll College Broulee, Libby Doughty, Sally Kennedy and Lavinia Stokes. The girls chose to do their Year 10 work experience with the green team and each spent a week assisting on various projects across the Shire including gaining expertise in fauna and flora monitoring, identification of invasive species and native plants, gathering data for the Tangaroa Blue national database, working alongside volunteers and conducting property inspections for weeds.

We are very fortunate to have had the time with the students who were enthusiastic, intelligent and passionate – the future looks bright if these are their representatives!

A 'Budd'-ing interest in the environment

Clyde River oyster growers formed a Landcare group several years ago now in order to tackle environmental issues on Budd Island. Budd Island is a 2.2ha council reserve situated just upstream of, and seen easily from, the Batemans Bay Bridge. The island can only be reached by boat and the growers take it in turns collecting contractors from the Bay to ferry them out for weed control works. Avid Landcarers, Kevin and Ewan Mcash (pictured) of Mcash oysters formed the Landcare group and have assisted with many improvements to infrastructure and ecology on the Island including implementing grants to provide a composting toilet, removing and replacing outdated industry tools and techniques to make farming more sustainable and conducting weed control and rubbish removal in this Swamp Oak EEC. The Island looks terrific and we look forward to taking other Landcare volunteers on a tour in 2017. To read more about the Clyde River Oyster industry check out the link below.

Green Army in the pink

The latest Green Army team assisting with environmental works across the Eurobodalla Shire have worked on dozens of sites and projects from weed control, revegetation, erosion control, litter collection, fencing and track maintenance. Last month things turned pink up the Deua River Valley where the team assisted with revegetation, planting hundreds of plants to assist with slowing the movement of water into what has become a problematic erosion gully which will assist with retaining soil and sediment that may otherwise find its way into the Deua River – our drinking water. This site is one of the many cared for by Deua Rivercare volunteers.

The current team will enjoy a well earned Christmas break before getting back into things in the second week of January. We are hopeful of continued funding for another Green Army team due to start in late February. If you have any Landcare works you think may be suitable for this team please contact Emma Patyus.

Need help with your weed ID?

A new function has been added to the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens website that will allow users to easily identify many of the weeds that are problematic in the Eurobodalla. The simple to use key has been a collaborative work in progress for Councils Environment Team and staff at the ERBG over the past 3 years, not to mention a real labour of love for Invasive Species Coordinator Paul Martin. The function was only made 'live' this week and will allow users to identify weeds by simply clicking on their  characteristics, such as leaf shape and flower colour. Check it out at http://www.erbg.org.au/weeds.php
