Taking a Stand

Dear fiber friends,

Increasingly, I’ve realized that I’m unable to separate my political self from my public persona. I believe, with all of my heart, that the personal is political. In many ways, this declaration is a scary one for me. I don’t want to offend or alienate any of my customers. However, if you’ve met me, you know that I’ve never actually been neutral on issues of social justice or human rights. Even in my attempts to position myself as an apolitical yarn dyer, my beliefs have always been a part of my art form. As the business has grown, so have the stakes. Now, when I use Neighborhood Fiber Co. to raise funds for a cause, such as the Baltimore Community Foundation’s Fund for Rebuilding Baltimore, that decision impacts all of the people affiliated with and employed by NFC.

So, with the support of the entire NFC team, below are a few of the ways that Neighborhood Fiber Co. is trying to make a real difference in the world. I am aware that these initiatives will not make everyone comfortable and will make quite a few people downright uncomfortable. But we do not live in a world where I can sit by and do nothing. At a time when the world’s moral compass seems to be spinning out of control, we are taking a stand. A stand against violence and tyranny. A stand in favor of justice for all people and unity in the face of oppression. It’s time for all of us to do something.

In peace,
Karida
With the current political climate in the U.S. and abroad, we at Neighborhood Fiber Co. wanted to create a graphic that represents our belief that it is not only possible, but necessary for people to be united. Together we are stronger.

Available in long-sleeved shirts and sturdy canvas tote bags.

We all know about the horrifying destruction and killing that has been taking place in Syria. Caught between government, rebels, and ISIS fighters, civilians are being killed en masse by indiscriminate bombing and missile strikes. In the midst of this terror, a group of unarmed Syrian civilians have been undertaking rescue missions to get people out of harm’s way. They risk their own lives to save the lives of their people, no matter their political or military affiliation. This group of heroes is known as the White Helmets. From now until January 7th, we are donating 100% of the profits from our newest graffiti dyed yarn to the White Helmets.

This new color, Shami, is named for another fearless Syrian activist. Abu Malik Al-Shami is a street artist who has been painting murals depicting themes of the Syrian Civil War using the rubble of war-torn cities as a canvas.

Knit a Pink Hat - The Women’s March on Washington is taking place on January 21, 2017 and it will be COLD. A group of knitters has decided to make and collect hot pink hats for marchers to wear. Even if you aren’t attending, you can make a pink hat to support and keep warm the women who are. To aid in the cause, all yarn in the Mondawmin colorway will be 15% off until January 7th, no discount code needed. For more information, as well as hat patterns, check out the organization’s website.
