Muscat: Oman has plans to open ten new desalination plants over the next seven years and training heads are looking for Omani staff for the projects, Eng Riadh Dridi, Head of Training in Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) said.

BP Oman’s Social Investment Programme has joined hands with MEDRC Water Research to deliver a capacity building programme (TAHLYA) in reverse osmosis desalination to fresh Omani graduates. READ MORE

Oman: TRC invites applications for water science award
The Research Council (TRC), in collaboration with the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science and the Ministry of Education, is inviting applications for the research and innovation award in water science. It began to receive applications from Monday, according to a statement. Oman: WEE Pros organized a study tour to Oman
WEE Pros GmbH, a German organization that has signed a MoU earlier this year with MEDRC, has organized a technical study tour to Sultanate of Oman upon the topic “Water & Sludge Reuse Management”. The Study Tour forms part of a Human Capacity Building Project for Water Service Providers funded by the GIZ Water Programme in Palestine and implemented by a consortium of ICON, IOW and GCT, with IOW as its implementing partner. READ MORE
 
Oman Technology: New venture capital firm for tech start-ups
Oman Technology Fund (OTF) with an initial capital of $200 million was launched last October at a ceremony presided over by HE Dr Ali Bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry. Oman Investment Fund’s (OIF) new technology-focused venture capital fund will invest in emerging technology enterprises in the Sultanate and the wider region. READ MORE

Oman: Intex Oman exhibition & forum 2016
INTEX Oman Exhibition & Forum 2016 grouped five distinct exhibitions each spotlighting a promising segment of the Sultanate’s increasingly diversifying economic base and took place last December 5-7th in Muscat. Oman: MEDRC Constructs Ayni Falaj as part of Youth Water Awareness Program
Part of our mission to find solutions to fresh water scarcity is to promote awareness of water conservation methods and traditions. We also seek to highlight the deep historical respect for water conservation in the cultures of our region. The Falaj is an original Omani irrigation system, dating back thousands of years and deeply-rooted in the country’s culture and history. As part of our Youth Water Awareness Program we will show visiting schools the workings of the Aflaj and discuss the importance of water and water conservation. READ MORE

Jordan: Donors pledge around $400 million for Red-Dead project
The Jordanian government has raised approximately $400 million from donor countries and agencies to finance the first phase of the Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Conveyance Project (Red-Dead), a government official said recently. Jordan: Could hydroponics help water-parched Jordan?
The United Nations estimates that by 2030, nearly half the world will be living in areas of high water stress. Jordan, in the midst of a water crisis, is looking for solutions. With hydroponic farming, crops are grown without soil and by recycling nutrient-dense water instead. About 50 to 75 percent less water is used than with conventional farming, and crops produce a higher yield with fewer pesticides. As most Gulf countries import up to 90 percent of their food, they've embraced renewable green technology. READ MORE

Within the German-Jordanian Programme "Management of Water Resources" 2016—2018, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in cooperation with the water sector public institutions in Jordan and aiming at strengthening the capacities of the three public water institutions with regard to the growing pressure on the scarce water resources, the CIHEAM Bari has been granted the responsibility to organize and implement a study tour for Jordanian WUAs in Italy. READ MORE

Jordan: Stakeholders celebrate completion of Water Network Project
The Millennium Challenge Account-Jordan (MCA-Jordan), with support from the US Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), celebrated recently the completion of the Water Network Project and the Wastewater Network Project in Zarqa Governorate. It also celebrated the inauguration of a new 1,627-square-metre administrative building for the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) in Zarqa, 22km northeast of Amman. READ MORE

Jordan's Water and Irrigation Ministry has shortlisted five consortia to submit definitive bids for phase one of the Red Sea Dead Sea project. They are: CNTIC Consortium (China National Technical Import & Export Corporation); Hutchison Water International Holdings; Korea Water Resources Corporation; Mitsubishi Corporation; and Suez International SAS. Jordan & Egypt: Roundtable meeting on greywater
Supported by WLE and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) facilitated a roundtable discussion on the Jordanian and Egyptian experiences related to research, adaptation and adoption of greywater reuse systems at the household level. EBRD and UfM private renewable energy framework for North Africa and Middle East
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) launched a joint programme today aimed at the development of private renewable energy markets in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. READ MORE

UAE: Solar-powered irrigation technology helps make UAE farms greener
Nasser Al Mansoori and Ali Al Taee want to make the country’s farms ­greener by swapping diesel ­generators for solar power. Most farms use diesel-powered pumps to extract the groundwater that is used to irrigate crops and trees. It is noisy, dirty and expensive, with farms paying up to Dh80,000 a year to fuel one generator. READ MORE

UAE: Abu Dhabi set for new water, electricity tariff
Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) in association with its two subsidiaries, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC), and Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC), has announced changes to its water and electricity services tariff starting from January 1, 2017. READ MORE

UAE: Abu Dhabi issues regulations on solar PV
Small-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Abu Dhabi have come under the spotlight after an announcement by Abu Dhabi to have them regulated. The Regulation and Supervision Bureau (RSB) in Abu Dhabi will, starting next month, roll out a set of regulations governing small-scale PV energy netting. READ MORE

UAE: Company to develop 200MW solar plant in Jordan
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company announced an agreement to develop a commercially driven utility-scale 200 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar plant for the Energy Ministry. The agreement comes less than one month after Masdar and its partners inaugurated the 117MW Tafileh wind farm in the Kingdom, a statement from the company said. READ MORE

UAE: Veolia to treat hazardous liquids at new Dubai plant

Saudi Arabia: Arid Saudi Arabia Could Need '$50 Billion' In Water Investment
Arid Saudi Arabia could need more than $53 billion in water sector investment supported by private funds as demand grows, according to officials. Saudi Arabia: KAUST- Exploring how rice could survive salt stress

Saudi Arabia: Saudi outlines privatised future for desalination and reuse
Saudi Arabia will tender desalination projects to private investors in the future, reports Saudi-US Trade Group (SUSTG). The move was confirmed in comments made by officials from Saudi's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), at the Water Investment Forum in capital city Riyadh on 27 and 28 November 2016. The Bureau of Reclamation has selected three projects to receive $299,685 under an innovative pilot-scale water treatment technologies and process for inland desalination. China: Hyflux unit selling China water treatment plant stake for US$136.5m
WATER treatment firm Hyflux Ltd on Wednesday said its unit is selling its 50 per cent stake in treatment plant Galaxy NewSpring for US$136.5 million. The stake will be sold to Yunnan Water (Hong Kong) Company Limited, which had held the remaining 50 per cent of the Chinese treatment plant. READ MORE

China: Towards Zero-Discharge Seawater Desalination
Researchers in China have developed a method of salt water desalination that generates very little waste and is less susceptible to scaling. Their results have been published in the Journal of Membrane Science. Called fracsis (fractionation + electrodialysis), the process uses a commercially-available nanofiltration membrane to first separate ions with different valency. Valency is a measure of the ability to form covalent bonds. READ MORE

Slovenia adds water to constitution as fundamental right for all
Slovenia has amended its constitution to make access to drinkable water a fundamental right for all citizens and stop it being commercialised. With 64 votes in favour and none against, the 90-seat parliament added an article to the EU country’s constitution saying “everyone has the right to drinkable water”.  READ MORE

Pakistan: grants approval for SWRO plant in Gwadar
Pakistan has approved plans for a five million gallons a day (189,000 m3/d) seawater reverse osmosis plant in Gwadar, a port city in the southwest, reports Express Tribune. The project's estimated cost of PKR 5,071 million ($48.4 million) is expected to be 90 per cent met by China, since Gwadar is a key location on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. READ MORE

The Playas de Rosarito seawater RO desalination mega-plant project has been six years in the making. It began as a twinkle in Consolidated Water's eye even before Mexico had introduced its new public-private partnerships law, but the act's introduction in 2012 gave the project a clear structure for moving ahead. An Integrated Approach to Refinery Wastewater Treatment
From the perspective of wastewater management, refiners must ensure effective contacting and phase separation in the desalter, to minimize oil under-carry to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This is a challenge with blends containing high fractions of opportunity crudes. READ MORE

“Starving” bacteria to double energy extraction from sewage
The researchers are currently collaborating with DC Water (the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority) to implement the new process on a part of the plant's full-scale water treatment installation. Membrane process systems have readily evolved into the preferred choice over conventional water treatment processes involving clarifiers, large media filters, cation and anion IX resin beds. MF and/or UF to remove suspended solids prior to RO and EDI are capable of removing suspended solids down to 0.02 microns in size which had previously caused fouling of downstream IX resin beds.
