Library staff can now share the GALILEO password with students and patrons by telephone once they have verified the caller’s affiliation with their institution. The GALILEO access policy, which previously stated that the password should not be shared by telephone, has been updated in an effort to provide easier access to users while staying aligned with database license agreements.

Introducing the new GALILEO Toolbar
We are happy to announce that the GALILEO Toolbar has been updated to use the LibX 2.0 platform and is available for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. The GALILEO Toolbar allows you to access GALILEO content easily right from your web browser without first going to the GALILEO website.
Toolbar Features
- Search for articles across resources using Discover GALILEO
- Link directly to key GALILEO resources, such as ProQuest databases, Mango Languages, SIRS, and Encyclopedia Britannica
- Find full-text magazines or journals
- Auto-link ISSN and ISBNs on web pages to easily see if access is available through GALILEO
- Highlight any text on a webpage, including search terms, titles, authors, and standard numbers, and use the right-click menu to search for it
- Updates automatically

Creating a Journal Alert
Journal alerts help you stay on top of your game by notifying you when the newest issue of a specific journal or magazine has been added to a GALILEO database. You can create one for yourself or someone else. For example, you can create an alert for Educational Leadership for your school principal or an alert for Consumer Reports for that patron who visits the library to read the latest issue. Here are the steps:
- Alerts are created from the Publication Details page (EBSCO) or Publication Information page (ProQuest) in an individual database. You can reach this page by finding the journal title in the Journals A-Z or Magazines A-Z link on the GALILEO home page. After searching for the title, you will be required to select a database from the pop-up window.
- EBSCO: On the Publication Details page, click the Share button, then select Email Alert. If you are not already logged into your EBSCO account, you will need to log in before creating the alert. More info.
- ProQuest: On the Publication Information page, click Set Up an Alert. You will only need to log in to your My Research account to modify or delete an alert.

LearningExpress Library's computer video courses have been updated. The computer skills module is one of the most valuable/most underused features of LE. Computer video courses, now updated for mobile optimization, help users learn Microsoft office products, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop. New video courses for Windows 10 courses have also been added.

Students at Fain Elementary are using GALILEO for their projects. GALILEO's resources for K-12 are the best for student media projects with tons of images, authoritative content, citation tools, and even downloadable videos. GALILEO staff are happy to recognize projects that show excellence in research at the annual Georgia Student Media Festival with the GALILEO Staff Award. The recommended date for Building Level Student Festivals is February 24, so it's time to hit those GALILEO databases and start creating a project.

LexisNexis Academic: Upcoming Changes
As you may have heard, Lexis-Nexis is in the process of developing their next-generation research solution for students for Lexis-Nexis Academic. Sean Donegan from Lexis-Nexis Academic shared the following update:
“We have designed a completely new research solution on our new platform based on our end-users’ feedback. It will contain the same content as the current LNA, but will be more flexible and allow us to add-in some of our additional content. One of the new features that I am excited about is it will have some data visualization/analytic tools to help our users gain insights and notice trends within our news content.”

GALILEO staff will be working behind the scenes to get ready for the new interface. Sometime this month, you will see a preview session, and once the new interface is live after ALA Midwinter, we will schedule and announce training sessions with Lexis-Nexis to show you all the new features. The Nexis® ID
The staff at Lexis-Nexis realizes that librarians have different research needs than students.
At present, librarians can create a personalized account in Lexis-Nexis Academic. After the interface changes become more end user friendly to students, it will be of value to librarians to phase out the old Lexis-Nexis academic account (if you had one) and create a free Nexis® ID. This will help librarians to access features exclusively available to them including:
• Personalization
• Alerts on topics of interest
• Save searches and maintain your search history
• Analytics tools to help you compare coverage, publications, and channels
• Custom search forms designed for unique content sets
You can request a Nexis® ID here. Your billing group (for the form) is 162Z6F. You can register as many academic librarians at your institution as you want. Please note that this feature is not being offered to faculty outside the library.

The Civil Rights Digital Library
The Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL) was launched in 2008 as part of the GALILEO Initiative. Its mission is to promote a better understanding of the civil rights movement by providing access to primary sources and educational materials from libraries, archives, museums, and public broadcasters.
The digital collection features video archives of unedited historical news footage from the WSB (Atlanta) and WALB (Albany, Georgia) archives from the University of Georgia Libraries. The CRDL draws upon holdings of more than ninety libraries and other partner organizations, and also provides a variety of instructional materials, including contextual stories, encyclopedia articles, lesson plans, and activities designed to facilitate the use of video content in teaching and learning about the movement. Education, especially history education, is placing a higher value on primary sources than ever before. it is important for students at every level to learn and understand more about the Civil Rights Movement, and the primary sources available via the Civil Rights Digital Library provide a great path to that understanding.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone was able to enjoy some relaxing time off, and that you are looking forward to the start of a fresh year. At GALILEO, we’re very excited to be getting started on our strategic planning sessions. We’ve already scheduled sessions with representatives from the USG libraries, K-12 school libraries, and public libraries, and will have the technical colleges and private academic library sessions scheduled soon. In the meantime, while that long-term vision gets created, we will continue to focus on efforts that are already underway. The USG libraries’ move to a new, next-generation system (Alma) is going well and will bring many changes to those colleges and universities – including an increased emphasis on sharing across the system. The Affordable Learning Georgia program has now saved university students over $35 million in its first two years, and continues to grow. We’re also planning to make some positive changes to e-resources licensing this spring by hiring a full-time licensing librarian to streamline those processes. Look for the new position opening to be announced soon. Later this month we’ll be talking to RACL about beginning a relationship with HathiTrust, and if funds allow, we also hope to add some new e-books that would be available for everyone. Finally, thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the GALILEO survey. We’re happy that we continue to be highly rated and valued by you, and appreciate all the feedback – good and bad. We really do read it all. In fact, the recent change to the password policy, allowing you to give out passwords over the phone to verified patrons, came about directly as a result of a comment received on the survey. So please keep the feedback coming, and we’ll keep trying to make GALILEO the best it can possibly be.
