2017 Parks & Recreation Brochure - Coming Soon 
The 2017 Guide To All Things Parks & Recreation will be available in early January. This handy resource contains a breakdown of upcoming recreation programs, special events, pool and swimming lesson info, park details, facility rentals and much more.

The guides are scheduled to be mailed to current and past program participants the week of Jan. 9. If you would like to be added to the list, simply contact our office at (319) 447-3590.

Additional copies will be available starting Jan. 18 at: Lowe Park, Thomas Park, Marion City Hall and Marion Public Library. Grab a copy and check out all the exciting new offerings from Marion Parks and Recreation in 2017!

Winter Weather Reminders
Snowmobiles and ATVs:
Please remember, snowmobiles and ATV's are prohibited from all City parks and trails.

Snow and Ice Removal:
It is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain sidewalks along the property, including any corners leading into the street. Sidewalks should be cleared within 12 hours after the snow or ice has been deposited on the sidewalk.
If the snow/ice is not removed within this window, the City will clear the sidewalk. The resulting charges will be 85 cents per square foot, plus a $25 administrative fee. If you have any questions, please contact the Parks Department at (319) 447-3580.
Woodland Care Days Planned for Faulkes Heritage Woods
The City of Marion and Trees Forever are pleased to host a series of Woodland Care Days at Faulkes Heritage Woods. Organizers are seeking volunteers interested in working, learning and spending time with nature and helping to manage invasive plant species. Plan to attend any or all of the following days:

Sat., Jan. 21 • 10 a.m. - Noon
Wed., Feb. 22 • 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Wed., Mar. 22 • 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Faulkes Heritage Woods, 30th Street & Tama Street

Youth Programs

Winter Olympic Day CHILDREN GRADES K–5TH
Looking for something to keep the little ones active for the afternoon on a no school day? Look no further than this new afternoon camp. Children will participate in variety of fun games and activities. Please dress your child accordingly as we plan to be outside for a portion of the afternoon. Limited number of spots available.
Fee: $25.00 per child
Days/Dates: Monday, Feb. 20
Time: noon–5 p.m.
Location: Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center

Lil' Chefs Cooking Class CHILDREN AGES 3–5
Come ready to bake, cook, and have a great time with other kids your age. Children will create delicious snacks and treats to eat and take home with them. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child.
Bring your appetite! Limit 15 participants.
Fee: $30.00 per child
Days/Dates: Thursdays, Feb. 2–23
Time(s): 10–10:30 a.m. OR 5:30–6 p.m. (Select One)

Adult Programs

Adult Team Trivia Night ADULTS AGES 18+
Bring your thinking caps and useless trivial knowledge to compete against other teams of adults in fun and challenging rounds of trivia. Categories will include, but are not limited to: pop culture, movies, music, sports, history, brand recognition and more. Participants are welcome to bring food and drinks to share with their team. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Minimum of 6 teams; Maximum of 12 teams.
Fee: $80.00 per team (Max: 8 people per team)
Days/Dates: Saturday, Mar. 4
Time(s): 6–9 p.m. (Doors open at 5:30 p.m.)

Family Programs

Curling Clinic OPEN TO ALL AGES
Join the Cedar Rapids Curling Club as they teach all the ins and outs of curling. Curling dates back to the 16th century in Scotland. Players take turns sliding polished granite stones across the ice while teammates influence the distance and direction by sweeping in front of the stone. The goal is to place the most stones in a target while knocking out opposing team stones. This clinic will feature demonstrations and a live round of curling by the experts. Participants will get to try the equipment out for themselves as well. Weather permitting.
Fee: FREE, but must contact 447-3590 to register
Days/Dates: Saturday, Jan. 14

Snowman Selfies OPEN TO ALL AGES
It’s Iowa, it’s going to snow! Get out and enjoy the great outdoors when the white stuff starts to fly this winter. Simply get out and build yourself a snowman anytime there is snow on the ground. Snap a selfie with your snowman and send it to tireland@cityofmarion.org. Please include your contact information and name for your cool snowman. Pictures will be posted to Marion Parks and Recreation’s Facebook page and the "Snowman Selfie" with the most “Likes” at the end of the  program will receive a prize from the department. Creativity will help,  so make your snowman standout.
Fee: FREE
Snowman Selfie photos will be accepted Jan. 1-Feb. 28, 2017.

B-I-N-G-O Nights at Lowe Park
Join us at the Lowe Park Arts & Environment Center for nights of fun, socializing, and a chance to win some cash! Games of BINGO will be played for $0.25 per card, per game. Cash prizes are paid to the winner of each game. There will also be a few bonus games with increased payouts. The night will conclude with a winner-take-all game of blackout. Participants are welcome to bring food and drinks to enjoy while they play. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Seats and cards are limited, so get there early to guarantee yourself a spot at a table. Open to all ages. 
Fee: FREE, seats and cards are first come, first serve.

Baseball & Softball Diamond Reservations
Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 4, we will begin accepting 2017 rental reservations for baseball/softball diamonds at the Recreation Office at Lowe Park. Fees must be paid at the time reservations are made. Marion Parks and Recreation has first priority of all fields and facilities and predetermines the time slots that are available for rental. 90 minute time slots are available.

Senior Activities at Lowe Park
The Lowe Park Arts and Environment Center is home to FREE senior activities throughout the week. These programs are provided and coordinated as part of the Witwer Healthy Aging Program by Aging Services.

The programs and activities are geared towards adults ages 55 and up. For more information on these programs or other sites, please contact JoEllen Haddad or Lauri Mitchell at Aging Services at 398-3644. You can also contact the Parks and Recreation office at Lowe Park at 447-3590.

Please note: If Linn-Mar Schools are canceled due to inclement weather, all senior activities scheduled are also canceled at Lowe Park.

Monday “Live Music” Dance— Listen and/or dance to live music from various bands. Meets every Monday beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the Oaks Room.
500 Cards— Group meets and plays every Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Sunburst Room.
Line Dancing— Get up and get moving with some line dancing. Meets every Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. in the Oaks Room.
B-I-N-G-O— Play penny BINGO every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sunburst Room. Pay a penny per card, per game and a nickel per card for blackout games.
Blood Pressure Clinics— Held the first Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. in the Sunburst Room.
Fresh Conversations— This nutrition education program is designed to promote better eating and physical activity. Includes food tastings. Held the third Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. in Sunburst Room.
Pinochle— Group meets and plays every Friday at 9 a.m. in the Sunburst Room.
