Notice for Submissions:
2017 WIFMCO Board Positions.

A note from our Chair, Windy Borman:

In 2016, 12 temporary Board Members launched Colorado’s (Emerging) Women in Film chapter. Our Bylaws are written, our 501c3 paperwork will be filed shortly, and soon we will be a recognized 501c3 organization, thus allowing us to apply for full Women in Film chapter—and offer you more membership benefits!

As 2016 comes to a close, I’m honored to report that in the past 9 months, we:
  • Welcomed 140+ women in film as members
  • Hosted 9 educational and networking events for WIFMCO members and non-members
  • Connected female film- and media-makers in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and beyond
  • Launched our First Screenwriting Contest (Final Deadline: Jan 31st)
  • We presented at Denver Startup Week
  • We co-sponsored a Halloween Mixer with Colorado Film and Video Association (CFVA).

When I met the other Founding Board Members in Fall 2015 and we decided to launch a Women in Film chapter, we knew we were committed to the endeavor; although I’m sure we’ve even surprised ourselves at how quickly we’ve grown into an influential film group in Denver.

While we have ambitious plans for the future, it’s worth recognizing: “Women, we get sh*t done!”

In March 2017, all WIFMCO chapter members in good standing (meaning their membership dues are up to date) will be able to cast their vote for who they would like to lead the future of the WIFMCO chapter by electing the official WIFMCO Board Members.

**If you joined WIFMCO in March 2016, you will need to renew your dues before February 28, 2017 in order to participate in chapter elections.**

All Board positions, including those held by the Founding Board Members, will be open for a vote by the members. So, chapter members, this really is your time to decide the future of women in film in Colorado.

**If you are interested in applying for a Board Member position, please email the Election Committee at: vote@wifmco.org [See list of items to email below].**

  • Eventually all Executive Team members (President, Vice President, Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer) and Committee Chairs (Development, Marketing, Membership and Programming) will serve 2-year commitments.
    • In order for these positions to alternate—and therefore avoid having a full board turn over—some will start as 1-year commitments in 2017, and then proceed as 2-year commitments starting 2018.
  • To be considered for a position, please submit the following:
    1. Resume

    3. Position and Name in an email Subject Line as follows:

      • For example, if I were running for Board Chair, I would include: Board Chair Applicant – Windy Borman
  • Email all your materials, with the correct subject line to: vote@wifmco.org

It’s been an honor to serve as your Founding Board and we look forward to working with you in 2017!

Sincerely,
Windy Borman

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Nancy Fingerhood

'Nancy Fingerhood Can’t Stop Creating'
By Christine DeHerrera

Like many busy women, Nancy Fingerhood has to juggle deep dives into her creativity with the realities of parental duty and entrepreneurship. But Fingerhood couldn’t stop writing and filming, even if she wanted to.

Mile High Nancy
The Denver-based creative writes, stars in, directs, shoots and edits “Mile High Nancy, a web series that blends sketch comedy with stand-up. “It’s about a single mother by choice who is also an aspiring comedian,” Fingerhood said. The show also incorporates Denver’s marijuana culture via the main character’s 420 cable cooking show, “Stirring the Pot with Mile High Nancy”.

While the series is fiction, Fingerhood mined material from her own experience of becoming a single mother by choice at the age of 36, a decade before she married her husband.  “There are a lot of shows about single parents,” she pointed out, “but not about single moms by choice.”

Fingerhood delves further into this topic on her blog,  “Confessions of a Middle Aged Woman Gone Wild”. She also muses about the luxuries of having a nervous breakdown BC, before child, as well as misguided relationship advice from matchmakers, the joys of aging and the stress of tackling life in the current political climate.

If the show and the blog were not enough to fill the hours, Fingerhood is co-owner with Michael Lindenberger, her husband, of Vivid Impressions Productions. The company provides creative perspectives through videography and photography.

Fingerhood enjoys shooting professional headshots and family portraits, but is intrigued by video memoirs. “I love to learn family stories from seniors,” she said. “I have done some creative sensual couples photography, and that is great too.”

Always a Storyteller
Like many overachieving creatives, there were early signs that Fingerhood was predisposed to becoming a professional storyteller: short stories when she was seven, three decades of journals, a degree in journalism.

While she was always writing, Fingerhood gathered life experience in her twenties and thirties. She taught English for the Peace Corps in Bulgaria, and for the non-profit WorldTeach in Thailand. There was also a stay in Tanzania, and time spent shooting promos in Argentina and Chile.

But her heart was always bound to storytelling. In 2005, an innocent trip to the Jersey Shore with six friends, complete with cheap motel and a night on the town, delivered a life changing epiphany.

She recalled on her blog, “I brought my Panasonic camcorder and started filming my friends in various states of undress as we got ready to go out clubbing. My friends began to shimmy and shake in their towels and undies.” Fingerhood realized she was in the epicenter of middle aged women gone wild. She continued, “An idea was born, and I knew that one day I would make an epic parody of Girls Gone Wild.”

Like many guerilla filmmakers, Fingerhood jumped in and learned as she went, adding producing, directing, casting, camerawork and editing to her role as writer.  “It’s been a steep learning curve,” she admitted, but something she thrived on. She’s now proudly obsessed by telling stories through film.

Up Next
Next up for Fingerhood is the completion of a screenplay about female comics on the road. “I’m fascinated by the lifestyle,” she explained of her interest in the subject. Fingerhood is also working on an animated project tentatively titled, “Dicks Anonymous” about, you guessed it, AA-style group therapy for penises.

She wrote on her blog that she’s an addict whose drug of choice is filmmaking. “I love seeing the ideas from my head become reality in video.  I like hearing people laugh at something I wrote.  So until my warped brain stops streaming images connected to stories, I’m stuck with this needle in my arm.”

Things to Come Directed by Mia Hansen Love
French born Actress turned Director.

Opens at Sie Film Center December 23rd:
What happens when the life you’ve worked so hard to build falls apart all at once? The incomparable Isabelle Huppert (Elle, The Piano Teacher, Amour) gives a radiant performance as Nathalie, a philosophy teacher with a seemingly settled existence, juggling a rich life of the mind with the day-to-day demands of career and family, including frequent visits to her drama queen mother (Édith Scob). But beginning with the bombshell revelation that her husband of 25 years is leaving her for another woman, one by one the pillars of Nathalie’s life start to crumble. For the first time in ages, she finds herself adrift, but also with a newfound sense of liberation. With nothing to hold her back, Nathalie sets out to define this new phase of her life and to rediscover herself. Winner of the Best Director award at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, the new film from writer/director Mia Hansen-Løve (Eden, Goodbye First Love) is an uncommonly intelligent, soul-searching look at what it means to create a life of one’s own.

A Kind of Murder
Stars Jessica Biel an actress who spent her teen years living in Boulder Colorado.

A Kind of Murder, set in 1960's New York, is based on Patricia Highsmith's novel, The Blunderer. Walter Stackhouse is rich, successful and unhappily married to the beautiful but damaged Clara. His desire to be free of her feeds his obsession with Kimmel, a man suspected of brutally murdering his own wife.

When Walter and Kimmel's lives become dangerously intertwined, a ruthless police detective becomes convinced he has found the murderer. But as the lines blur between innocence and intent, who, in fact, is the real killer?

Highsmith has had many popular and highly successful films made from her novels — from Hitchcock’s iconic Strangers on a Train to Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley and, most recently, Todd Haynes’ Carol. Highsmith has a huge international fan base and remains in a class of her own when it comes to the psychological thriller.
