A Declaration of Christmas Peace is announced in several Finnish cities on Christmas Eve. The oldest and most popular event is held at noon at the Old Great Square of the former Finnish capital Turku, where the declaration has been read since the 1320s. The Declaration of Christmas Peace is a tradition which launches the Christmas celebrations and in a way marks the official start of Christmas. The exact wording used during the first few centuries of the tradition has been lost over time, but the main contents of the declaration remain the same: the declaration is read out loud to remind people that Christmas Peace has begun, to advise people to spend the festive period in harmony, to threaten offenders with harsh punishments, and to wish all a merry Christmas!

At the height of the First World War, in 1916, the Dutch banker Johan Wateler wrote his last will in which he decided to allocate his fortune for a peace prize, the current Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize. This prestigious prize is awarded every year at the Peace Palace in The Hague. This publication offers the first biography of the relatively anonymous Dutchman who followed in the footsteps of great peace philanthropists as Alfred Nobel. Johan Watelers motives for establishing a peace prize are discussed by following his career as a pioneer of social credit banks under the patronage of Princess Sophie of Orange-Nassau. And by looking at his personal interests for theatre and poetry. The gift of November 16, 1916 remains an inspiring example of philanthropy as a ‘credit for peace’ in times of war and crisis.

UN Peacemaker is part of the UN’s overall effort to provide advice and support to the Secretary-General and his Representatives in their efforts to resolve international disputes and internal conflicts. It is also intended to be useful to UN partners actively engaged in peacemaking efforts, including Member States, regional organisations, civil society, non-governmental organisations and national mediators. A guide will tell you about the building and about the institutions housed in it. A tour through the Great and Small Hall of Justice, the corridors and the Japanese Room will give you an impression of the most beautiful rooms of the Palace. Book here your tickets (€12,-). Tours have duration of approximately 45 minutes and are offered in Dutch and in English. A group consists of a maximum of 20 people. We recommend you to visit the exhibition and watch the film in the Visitors Centre before participating in a guided tour. Please note: Visitors are admitted only with a valid ID. War is a state of organized, armed and often prolonged conflict carried on between states, nations, or other parties typified by extreme aggression, social disruption, and usually high mortality. In addition to the existence of this organized behavior pattern amongst human primates, very similar organized warlike behavior patterns are also found in many other primate species. The set of techniques used by a group to carry out war is known as warfare. An absence of War is usually called Peace.
