Brighton & Hove LSCB Safeguarding Training January 2017
From all of us at the Local Safeguarding Children Board we would like to wish you a safe and healthy 2017. If one of your resolutions was to ensure that your safeguarding training was up to date then please see below for details of our upcoming courses. Our 2017-18 training programme will be announced in the coming months, but please do look at the Learning Gateway, or our website, as new courses will be added when dates are confirmed.
Why not start the new year by discussing one of our Practice Point Scenarios in your team meeting? To help busy professionals explore a range of safeguarding subjects we have produced this series, each containing a brief scenario for discussion with suggested links to access further information. Join us: Safeguarding Board Lay Members
Brighton & Hove Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) and the Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB) are both on the hunt for new Lay Members. Lay members to join as full members of the Boards and also contribute to subcommittee meetings, bringing a voice from the public and providing challenge to the professional perspectives. Professional Curiosity Bulletin
Professional curiosity is the capacity and communication skill to explore and understand what is happening within a family rather than making assumptions or accepting things at face value. This is a key facet of safeguarding and child protection work, so our latest LSCB Bulletin explores this in further detail and how we can better work together to ask the right questions, at the right time, ensuring that the voice of the child and their experience, is at the centre of what we do.
The LSCB Annual Report for 2015-16 is available to read online and summarises how the Board, and our partners, work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in our city.
This report outlines what we have done to progress work on our priority concerns of Child Sexual Abuse, Child Sexual Exploitation and Neglect & Emotional Harm, as well as how we have strived to improve our Participation & Engagement work and the Service Responses in the city.
Introducing Relationship Based Conferences - Briefing Session
Brighton & Hove Children Services are adopting a new model for child protection conferences, based on the Strengthening Families model used widely across the country. The model aims to improve family involvement in creating a plan to reduce risk in their family and will shift the emphasis within the conference to concentrate on developing a shared understanding of risk, protective factors, complicating factors and areas still unknown in order to create an effective plan.
We are currently updating day 3 of our core training: Child Protection Conferences & Core Groups to reflect the new model for conferences. If you have already attended days 1 & 2 of the LSCB training then this briefing will complete your core LSCB safeguarding training.

Wednesday 11 January 2017 10am-1pm Harmful Practices: Working with Victims of FGM
This training, provided by Safe in the City, will raise awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM), including the various forms and the cultural background to the practice. It will explore the physical and psychological impact FGM has on a woman’s wellbeing as a historic victim of FGM, as well as the impact it will have on a young girl who is a victim, or at risk of, FGM. These forms of violence and abuse will be contextualised within a wider context of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG).
At the end of the briefing session, participants will:
Know what constitutes FGM
Understand reasons given for performing FGM and the impacts it has on individuals
Be able to recognise indicators that a woman/girl has had/is at risk of FGM
Understand current legislation around FGM
Be able to respond appropriately to cases including referring to the appropriate agencies
Preventing & Disrupting the Sexual Exploitation of Children & Young People
This full day event, presented by The WiSE Project,will raise your awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) and help you understand the vulnerabilities and risk factors that may place a young person at risk. The session will provide you with knowledge of the prevalence and forms of young people’s sexual exploitation in Brighton & Hove, and will help you know how to get support for young people who are exploited. Child Neglect
This course will look at the issues surrounding neglect and help you understand how it can effect children and young people as well as exploring how difference agencies can work together to reduce risk and the benefit of early interventions
Learning Outcomes:
explore and broaden participants’ understanding of child neglect
introduce participants to the benefits of taking a systems approach to improving professional practice
provide an opportunity to explore local multi-agency responses to child neglect through scenarios and discussion
help practitioners identify individual learning about child neglect and multi-agency working
identify what aspects of the system help and hinder good practice
Wednesday 8 February 2017: 10am-1pm Harmful Practices:Forced Marriage and so called ‘honour’ based violence
This training, provided by Safe in the City, will explore the definitions of forced marriage and so called ‘honour’ based violence, increase awareness of how to respond to cases of forced marriage and the key procedures that should be followed if risk is identified. Attendees will also explore recommendations and guidelines produced for practitioners by the Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) and how to implement them in their practice. The session will increase knowledge of Brighton & Hove’s approach towards harmful practices, highlight local and national services and how to refer to these services appropriately. These forms of violence and abuse will also be contextualised within a wider context of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG).
Child Sexual Exploitation: Working with Young People at Risk
This course, run by The WiSE Project, will build on the key points explored in our basic CSE awareness course and provide workers with the confidence and skills to work with young people around issues relating to Sexual Exploitation. You will explore ways of working directly with young people around CSE in more detail and look at the resources available. There is also an enhanced focus on online safety and police disruption techniques as well as an outline of the local picture of CSE with reference to serious case review recommendations. Wednesday 22 February 2017: 9.30-4.30pm
''Hidden'' Children & Young People: Working with Invisible Families
There are a number of children who remain “hidden” from mainstream services for a variety of reasons. This may be because they are placed with a non-family member for more than 28 days, are transient due to lifestyle choices made by their parents/carers, are educated other than at school or have entered the UK with parents/carers and have no access to services. All of these factors may cause a heightened risk and lack of safeguarding provision and this session will consider how we can ensure that they are appropriately protected.
By the end of the course, you will have learnt:
what constitutes a private fostering arrangement
the legal duty the local authority has towards a private fostering arrangement
the local arrangements for liaison with travelling families
how the local authority supports home educated children
gain background knowledge to support working with a child or family from a refugee or migrant background, and understand how safeguarding procedures are applied in these circumstances
Tuesday 16 March 2017: 1pm-4pm Introduction to Harmful Practices:Female Genital Mutilation, Forced Marriage and so-called ‘Honour’ Based Violence
This training, provided by Safe in the City, will explore the definitions and practices associated with female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage and ‘so called’ honour based violence, placing these within a wider context of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG). The session will focus on communities these commonly take place within and the procedures if a disclosure of, or a risk is presented of a harmful practice taking place.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Demonstrate a clear understanding of different harmful practices
Identify the risk factors that can render women and girls vulnerable to harmful practices
Identify the signs that a woman or girl is at risk of, or experiencing, harmful practice/s
Describe the legislative and policy frameworks that exist for the prevention of harmful practices, the safeguarding of women and girls and the prosecution of perpetrators
Understand that while harmful practices can have a disproportionate impact on some groups, they are a form of VAWG, are interconnected with other forms of domestic and sexual violence and abuse and are likely to co-exist within the same family environment
