Happy New Year!

Another new year, and a new competition season approaches. If you’re interested in competing in taekwondo but never had the chance, there’s no time like the present. The Two Rivers Invitational on January 21st is the perfect tournament to get started. Athletes, coaches, referees and spectators will all be walked through the tournament process. Experienced competitors will demonstrate what to do, and what not to do! Some of the best referees in the country will be on hand to guide new referees and ensure fair play and a positive introduction to sport taekwondo. Early registration ($50) ends on Monday, January 16th.

The Iowa Taekwondo Alliance (ITA) will host a sport poomsae seminar on February 18th in Waukee. Master Ryan Bishop will share some of the updates from the seminar he attended a few weeks ago with a national poomsae referee expert. Advanced students will get a lot out of this event. If you haven't done an ITA event before, let me know and I'll get you a password.

The ITA will once again host the 2017 USA Taekwondo Iowa State Championship. A sanctioned referee seminar will be Friday March 3rd, and the tournament will be Saturday, March 4th. USAT membership is required. Register here!

Safe Sport

USA Taekwondo (and all governing bodies for Olympic sports) recently implemented mandatory training in Safe Sport—an initiative that offers training regarding misconduct in sport and the measures we can all take to protect athletes. Learning about the six types of misconduct is an important step to recognize, reduce and respond effectively to inappropriate and potentially harmful behavior. Mrs and Mr Master Carpenter have already completed the Safe Sport e-course as a part of our membership with USA Taekwondo.

We encourage all parents and athletes to take the FREE e-course themselves. The online courses take approximately 90 minutes and will educate you on the common risk factors in sport and suggest ways to protect athletes. By gaining a better understanding of the dynamics involved in certain situations, you can join the team of clubs, coaches, administrators and parents committed to creating safe conditions for sport.
