Happy New Year from the BC Chamber

Chamber Leaders in Action: Christie Ray, Prince George Chamber

Bringing business leaders together for mutual success

If British Columbia were a dartboard, the city of Prince George would very nearly be the bull’s-eye, directly in the centre.

A bustling community of 80,000 people, but with amenities for 300,000, Prince George is known as the capital of northern British Columbia. Natural resources form the economic cornerstone of the community, but with a diverse enough portfolio of forestry, mining and oil and gas that it stays relatively stable, in spite of the boom and bust nature of those industries.

It also boasts a premier educational institution in UNBC, as well as top tier medical facilities.

Those are all things that make Christie Ray, the Prince George Chamber CEO of three years, proud of her community. It’s also what made her decide to host a Chamber of Commerce Business Development Forum last year, bringing together small to medium sized business leaders in natural resource industries.

The event was so successful that she decided to do it again this year, in partnership with the BC Chamber, on Jan. 31.

Chamber Week
February 20-24, 2017

Chamber of Commerce Week, celebrated annually during the third week in February, recognizes the outstanding contributions that Chambers and Boards of Trade make to communities right across B.C.

For the BC Chamber's network of Chambers and Boards, this week is an opportunity to showcase Chambers' activities and advocacy impact and to strengthen community links through open houses, business workshops and other activities.

Every year, the BC Chamber provides a range of communications materials and support to its members, to help local Chambers and Boards celebrate Chamber Week in communities throughout B.C.

Chamber Week 2017 is February 20 to 24, 2017.

The BC Chamber has sent out its proclamation request to government.

We have also emailed the template proclamation for local Chambers which you may find here.

Inudstry Training Authority:
Your greatest business asset only becomes more valuable when you share it

In last month’s Journal of Commerce, Gary Herman, CEO, Industry Training Authority spoke to the positive impact business owners can have on the future of the trades industry. The relationship between an apprentice and employer sponsor is mutually beneficial. The employer is able to train the apprentice to their business needs, while the apprentice gains the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their trades training and certification.

Welcome Elizabeth Aman-Hume,
ED, Port Hardy Chamber of Commerce

Elizabeth is thrilled to be appointed as Executive Director for the Port Hardy Chamber of Commerce and she looks forward to getting to know the job and her fellow Chamber Executives in the coming months.

Although new to the Chamber of Commerce sector, she comes to the job with 20+ years of experience in non-profit management and has held senior leadership roles in operations, business development, marketing and fundraising in the UK, the USA and Canada.

Her roles have included Head of Fundraising for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in the UK, Executive Director for the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra in Ontario and, most recently, she served as Manager of Resource Development for United Way Kitchener Waterloo.

Elizabeth grew up in a globe trotting family and has lived in Europe, Australia, South Africa and the USA. She now resides in beautiful Port Alice on Northern Vancouver Island with her husband Bob. She is also the mother of three grown children and the (shamelessly gushing) grandmother of one awesome little boy.
