Why businesses are increasingly using video learning for employee development

If we think about how we are all using video across social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter - to communicate, learn and share knowledge, it’s not surprising to see the benefits of video are spilling over into training employees.

Here are just a few reasons why this transformation in video learning is happening within the workplace:
  • Employers are seeing a rise in video data traffic
Cisco predicts that by 2019, 63% of all business network traffic will be video, an increase of 36% from 2014. VCM systems are becoming mainstream and there is explosive growth in the use of mobile video data. Ericsson’s 2015 video data report predicts a thirteen-fold increase in video traffic growth in business mobile data usage by 2020.
  • Enterprise video platforms are on the rise
Video learning is revolutionising the way we learn in the workplace and is predicted to play a much more significant role in the coming years. A recent report from Training Magazine found that 83% of organisations will be using more video for digital learning in the coming years. This can be seen by a surge in the rise in video content management (VCM) platforms coupled with the ease, accessibility and quality of recording devices.
  • Employees prefer video learning
Forrester Research showed that 75% of employees are more likely to watch a video than read a document, email or web article. Video learning is highly accessible and easy to view and replay which has significant cost savings for training large populous groups of learners across multiple sites and countries. The ease of viewing video learning while on the move using smart devices is also attractive to learners and employers to optimise efficient delivery to meet real-time learning with demand 24/7.
  • Improved learner recall
Savo Group reports learner recall depreciates at a rate of 35% over three months and up to 90% after six months from instructor-led training whilst Rusted and Coldheart research showed that using video content with text for training increases learner retention by 83%, demonstrating video learning is highly effective for knowledge retention.
  • Millennials and Generation Z are video learners
Millennials and Gen Z prefer video learning as a medium. Video learning is more prevalent in school, universities and through social learning, so employers are increasingly modernising their learning strategies to meeting the needs of a digitally savvy talent pool.

Whilst there is an increase in demand for video learning, there’s also a great deal of confusion in how to get video learning strategy and infrastructure future proofed, as well as adapting existing programmes to harness this powerful ‘watch and learn’ revolution.

So, if your business is looking to embrace video learning to meet the demands of a modern digital multi-site workforce, to improve the effectiveness of your training programmes or to save costs - we'd be delighted to offer independent advice to consider options that work best for your business.
