2017 Annual Colorado Business Economic Outlook

The 52nd annual Colorado Business Economic Outlook book was recently released. Covering almost everything from construction to international trade and touching upon all four corners of the state, the report provides a comprehensive picture of Colorado's economy. Download your copy here.

New Report Identifies Factors for Community Resiliency

The University of Colorado Leeds School of Business and the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) released a new study that cites community visions, leadership pipelines and public-private partnerships as factors that are essential to being an economically resilient community. The study conducted a comprehensive statewide analysis of factors that affect a community's economic resiliency to understand what makes some communities in Colorado thrive while others fail to retain population and sustain economic growth. Durango and Salida are sited as case studies to illustrate how rural communities can thrive. Download report here.

Winter Driving Tips

The Colorado Department of Transportation has lots of resources available for drivers on its Winter Driving web page. You can also check where the state’s snowplows are by visiting cotrip.org. Tips for safe driving in wintry conditions include the following, and remember, always buckle up.
  • Have good snow tires on your car. Test them by inserting a quarter into the tire tread upside down, with Washington’s head going in first; if the top of George’s head is covered by the tread, your tires are OK. Do this test in multiple points around each tire, and if the top of his head is visible at any point, you need new tires.
  • Always keep the top half of your gas tank full. It can give you better traction and a bigger margin of error if you get stuck in a storm and must keep the engine running periodically to keep warm.
  • If you are stuck in a serious storm, do not leave your car. Run the engine periodically and wait for help.
  • Remember that four-wheel drive does not mean four-wheel stop. A four-wheel drive vehicle will not stop any better in icy conditions, especially if you have inadequate snow tires.
  • Drive for the conditions. In poor visibility, don't drive faster than you can see ahead. High speeds in poor or no visibility can lead to large chain-reaction accidents.
  • Respect the winter weather. Leave extra space between your vehicle and others on the road including plow trucks. Unsafe driving can negatively affect everyone else on the road.
