Voices for Any Given Child Indy is an initiative that gives leaders in the Indianapolis community the opportunity to focus on issues in arts education and in the community, as well as their personal investment in the success of Any Given Child Indy.

In the latest post, Brenda Johnston, Any Given Child Indy Creative Engagement committee member and Arts Administration professor at Butler University discusses how arts education can help to address some of the issues our society faces today.

She says, “Arts education in all forms helps children and people of all ages manage and share their emotions in constructive ways. The arts teach students about different cultures in a myriad of ways that help them to relate to and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds; supporting the development of a more understanding, accepting, and cohesive society.”

Arts Education Reduces Stress Level of Low-Income Students

Boston Arts Academy, the High School of the Future

“Many education leaders lament the current state of American high schools and say we need to redesign them to do better at teaching creativity, design thinking, forming and defending ideas, collaboration and effective communication, and STEM skills. But there’s a school in Boston that’s already doing all that right now: Boston Arts Academy.” Click here to read about Boston Arts Academy’s key strategies to success through high-quality arts instruction.

About the Program

The creative arts are critical to student success in our schools. They develop intellect, imagination, spirit, emotional intelligence, self-esteem, and discipline in young people.

Over the next five years (2016-2021), the Arts Council of Indianapolis is working to ensure that every student in Indianapolis Public Schools (K-8) has the opportunity to have transformative encounters with the arts. Any Given Child Indy is a collective impact partnership with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Mayor’s Office of Indianapolis, and the Superintendent’s Office that brings diverse sectors of our community together to develop a plan for integrating high-quality arts instruction into all IPS schools.

Any Given Child Indy is a five-year incremental process designed to ensure that 100% of Indianapolis students (K-8) have equitable access to the creative arts. The Arts Council has a talented team dedicated to this project who share a passion for ensuring access and equity for all students in grades K-8. Over the next five years we will work with community leaders to:
  1. Match teachers with arts organizations
  2. Engage new voices of support for arts in schools
  3. End inequality in funding of arts education in Indianapolis Public Schools
