2017 PNAHA WASHINGTON STATE FEMALE DEVELOPMENT CAMP

All Washington female hockey players who are born in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 are eligible to attend this camp at the Xfinity Community Rink in Everett, January 28 & 29, 2017.

WWFHA encourages all of-age Washington Wild players to participate, and all other players to watch the event so they can see the top players in the state skate together. Do not miss this once-a-year opportunity to be seen by evaluators, and possibly be chosen to attend the USA Hockey Multi-District Camp in Colorado Springs, CO in June, which is a precursor to the USA Hockey National Camp.

Players improve and test their skills at the camp by playing with and against other female players from all over WA state in skill sessions (first day) and scrimmages (second day). Additional ice time, exposure to a broad pool of players and coaches, and the opportunity to compete at a higher level aid in players’ growth and development.  Whether or not a player is selected to move on to subsequent USA Hockey camps, she will gain from this unique, fun and challenging hockey experience. Last year, eight Wild players were selected from the WA state camp to attend the Pacific District camp!

GOOD LUCK TO THE 12U/14U TEAM IN OUTDOOR TOURNAMENT PLAY

The Washington Wild 12U/14U team travels to Kalispell, MT, the gateway to Glacier National Park, this weekend to compete in the Flathead Valley Winter Classic.  The Wild plays four games in a beautiful woodland setting on an outdoor rink, against other all-girl’s teams—a change from their usual MHL opponents.  Best of luck to this hard-working team!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2016 #WhenGivingGoWild Campaign.

We raised $16,201 dollars together to offer more financial aid, purchase team gear, and promote and grow the sport. Without your support we wouldn’t be able to provide hockey opportunities to so many girls.

We are still accepting donations for 2017 if you want to share a little holiday cheer in early 2017. Otherwise, please think of the Washington Wild at the end of 2017 in your charity planning.

WWFHA accepts cash donations, company matches, company volunteer hours, and stock donations.

WILD HOLIDAY TOURNAMENTS IN REVIEW - ANGELS ON ICE

8U Competes in First Tournament!
The first-ever, full-time, all girls 8U team in Washington state skated in their first-ever tournament over the holiday break.  For many players, it was their first hockey tournament ever,  and reports are that everyone had an amazing time.

The team played the Surrey Falcons, Richmond Ravens and Langley Lightning, finishing 1-2. We are so proud of this fantastic first-year team!

10U Earns a Silver Medal at the Angels on Ice Tourney
The first-ever, full-time, all girls 10U team in Washington state earned a Silver medal in the Langley tournament over the holiday break.

Earning a 2-1 record in round robin play, the 10U Wild advanced to and won the Semi-Finals in an OT Shootout vs. South Delta.

The team faced a top C1 Abbottsford Abby team in the Championship Game, the team they previously lost to 7-0. The Washington Wild battled hard but the puck didn’t bounce their way. The Wild earned Silver with their 0 - 3 loss. We are thrilled that this hard working team plays with such passion and heart!

The schedule and final record is:
               -vs. Langley Lightning (Win 7 - 0)
               - vs. Abbotsford Abby (Loss 0 - 7)
               - vs. South Delta Stars (Win 5 - 0)
               - Tournament Semi-finals vs. South Delta Stars (Win 3-2)
               - Tournament FINALS vs. Abbotsford Abby (Loss 0 - 3)

MICHELLE PICARD'S WA WILD VISIT

Michelle Picard spent four days working with the Washington Wild Rep teams during the 2016 Rep Winter Performance Camp – teaching players, getting to know them on and off the ice, and talking about her experience at the collegiate, professional, and international levels.

Later, Michelle met with the 12U, 10U and 8U players for a similar skate and session at Highland Ice Arena before she returned to New York.

WWFHA presented Michelle, a NY Riveters and a ‘big sister’ to the Washington Wild players, with a practice jersey, and a new team onesie jumpsuit.

Michelle said:
“Thank you for this week! It was a blast! I would love to come back. It is clear that the Washington Wild is a special organization and will definitely pave the way for girls' hockey in Washington State. I feel so lucky to be a part of it, even in the smallest way.”

Thanks to the Johnson Family for hosting Michelle, and thank you to the entire WWFHA Family for making Michelle feel so welcome!

BENDER & SPOONER HOLIDAY SKATE

Over 20 players from the community skated and made connections with and obtained autographs from these distinguished players. WWFHA presented these all-star players with a Washington Wild scarf. We hope they return next year during their holiday break!

Bob Motzko: Exercising Mental Muscle

Players can spend hours on the ice working on skating, stickhandling in the garage and strength training in the weight room.

But what about the mental side of the game?

How should players at 14U/16U be exercising that aspect of development? And how important is mental strength and preparation?

“Mental strength is a huge part of sports,” said Bob Motzko, head coach of the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team and longtime bench boss at St. Cloud State University. “It’s something you need to develop and something you need to have as a part of your training.

“If you don’t have a (strong) mental game, you’re missing a big part of your game as a whole. Period.”

See what Coach Motzko has to say about the following topics here:

  • Positive attitude, positive players
  • Take responsibility for yourself
  • Keeping focus where it needs to be
  • Staying grounded
  • Mind over matter
Enjoying the game and its surroundings.

Q: My child is moving into that phase where there are a lot of hockey options. What’s the best path?

A: This is a great question, and if hockey is a sport your child wants to continue and pursue at a competitive level, it’s good to begin educating yourself (and your child) now.

Unlike some other sports, hockey fortunately offers many different paths for your child, and everyone’s path will be different. Making these decisions can be stressful at times, so it’s important to find people whose counsel you trust; people who have the best interests of your child in mind.

The first thing to remember is that kids at this age develop at a different rate physically and cognitively, so it’s critical that you don’t put your child in an environment that she is not ready for. Playing in a league or on a team that is perceived to be the “best” can, in fact, harm your child’s development. It’s far better for her to play at the correct level instead. And remember, the correct level is a highly individual thing, defined by the coaching and opportunities your child will receive, not the team name on the equipment bag or how many As are attached.

Click here to read more and sift through the options as described by Rich Hansen, USA Hockey ADM Regional Manager.
