Cochrane Oral Health's Co-ordinating Editor elected to Cochrane Governing Board

Cochrane's governance structure has recently changed, and a new Governing Board replaces the Cochrane Steering Group. The Board comprises 13 members, some are elected by Cochrane contributors and some are appointed by the Board. The Board is responsible for overseeing and implementing Cochrane's strategic development. Professor Jan Clarkson, one of Cochrane Oral Health's Co-ordinating Editors, has been elected as a member of the governing board, after elections held early in 2017. Congratulations to Jan! Cochrane Oral Health at IADR

Members of the Cochrane Oral Health Editorial Team attended the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Annual Meeting in San Francisco in March. We presented a pre-conference symposium entitled “Systematic Reviews in Oral Health: an Overview and Practical Skills Workshop”. The symposium was well attended; and featured three breakout sessions on searching the literature, GRADE and statistical methods, where participants could gain more in-depth knowledge and some hands-on experience.

New podcast available!

Cochrane Oral Health's Co-ordinating Editor Helen Worthington has recorded a brand new podcast for the Cochrane review: Oral hygiene care for critically ill patients to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia. You can listen in here to Helen's discussion of the evidence.

Wikipedia editing project

A group of dental students from the University of Dundee have teamed up with Cochrane to re-write Wikipedia articles, and make sure articles are evidence-based. The team are led by Nour Geres, a Dundee graduate. They now are looking to expand the project throughout the UK, and perhaps internationally. You can read more about the project on our blog here, with an update here. An article in Scottish Dental on how the project is moving forwards was recently published.

New and updated publications on the Cochrane Library

New review: Chlorhexidine mouthrinse as an adjunctive treatment for gingival health

51 studies including 5,345 participants were assessed. The review found that there is high quality evidence that use of chlorhexidine mouthrinse in addition to toothbrushing leads to a large reduction in plaque, although rinsing for 4 weeks or longer caused tooth staining which required scaling and polishing by a dental professional. Read more.

New review: Non-pharmacological interventions for alleviating pain during orthodontic treatment

14 randomised controlled trials with 931 participants were included in this new review, looking at the alternatives to painkillers during orthodontic treatment. Interventions investigated include: lasers administered by the orthodontist, vibratory devices, music therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Read more.

Review update: Adhesives for bonded molar tubes during fixed brace treatment

From the limited data of two studies at low risk of bias, it would appear that bonded molar tubes are associated with a higher failure rate than molar bands. Read more.

New protocol: School dental screening programmes for oral health

This new review will look at whether screening children in school and assessing their oral health helps to reduce untreated tooth decay and increase dental attendance.   Read more.

New protocol: Adjunctive systemic antimicrobials for the non-surgical treatment of chronic and aggressive periodontitis

The focused objective of this review will be to assess the effects of systemically administered antibiotics as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in chronic and aggressive periodontitis in comparison to SRP alone or with placebo. Read more.

New protocol: Systemic antibiotic prophylaxis for preventing infectious complications in maxillofacial trauma surgery
