South Dakota Legislature and Governor Approve $58 million Upgrade for South Dakota ADRDL
PIERRE SD – South Dakota agricultural leaders are hailing legislative approval of a plan to upgrade and expand the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) in Brookings.  Groups led by SD Cattlemen’s Association, SD Pork Producers Council, SD Association of Cooperatives, SD Soybean Association, and SD Farm Bureau worked closely with other livestock groups, the state veterinarian, legislative leaders and the governor’s office to develop a funding package for the $58 million project.  Read more...

Clinical Pathology Section Adds New Blood Chemistry Analyzer

The Clinical Pathology Lab has brought on-line a new Vet Axcel chemistry analyzer from Alfa Wassermann, helping the section more easily provide fast and and accurate test results for blood chemistry analysis. It can process up to 15 patient samples at once - up to 285 tests per hour - and has a “stat” feature so a critical patient sample can be added at any time.  The new equipment allows single or panel tests to be run in any order.

The ADRDL test menu includes routine chemistry, enzyme, lipid, thyroid (T4), and electrolyte assays on serum and more. Additionally, full chemistry profiles as well as smaller custom profiles are available for both large and small animals based on client needs. The new analyzer has open channels, allowing for the addition of new assays that are not routinely offered, in order to meet specific client testing needs.  If there is a test  or panel that is not currently listed, but would be important for your future routine testing, please contact either Julie Colby or Dr. Angela Pillatzki at 605-688-5171 to discuss further.

Submission forms with panel and analyte information for Clinical Pathology samples are available on-line at Submission Forms.

Reminders from the Lab

  • It's important to list the sample collection date, particularly when test results will be used for health papers (Certificates of Veterinary Inspection) or export work.  Including the date on your submission form will help prevent unnecessary delays.

  • Same-day rabies testing results will be available when samples arrive at the lab prior to noon.  Samples arriving later will be tested the next working day. Remember to submit both halves of the brain fresh (not formalin-fixed) in order for us to complete testing as per CDC requirements.
